Default Tell me about Rem 7mm SAUM

Have my sights set on buying one of these rifles.
Purpose: Mountain hunting
Game Species: Himalayan Tahr, Wapiti.
Range 350-400 yards.
Himalayan Tahr is very similar to Rocky Mountain Goat or maybe Dall.

Tell me your opinion on the Rem BDL
What would you expect to pay?

What is your pet loads and bullet weight etc for the above species?

Will value your opinions, and will help me make the final decision.

Tim,

I think it is a better cartridge than the 7mm WSM because it is smaller in diameter and has some taper to the body. I considered one myself in a 700 bdl and think it would work best with a 24" barrel because it has a little less case capacity than the 7 wsm.. www.shortmags.org
would be a good place to look ...there is a lot of feedback on it there.

10 Years on, I am still very happy with this caliber.
Although hard to source ammunition.
Still impressed with accuracy and knockdown power.
Last kill 2 weeks ago. Chamois in NZ Alps.

I love my 7MM RM, but if you like reloading - you might enjoy reading this.

I don't "need" anything more than what the classic cartridges already provide.

Thumbs up

Very American" article
I note there is no mention of europes most popular calibre which is the 7X64 Brenneke. (Much the same as the .280)
Still a good read.
Thanks for sharing.

The problem with the 7mm SAUM (assuming you might be hunting is Asia ???) is finding ammo...good luck finding it anywhere in KY except maybe at Cabela's or a Bass Pro shop...

The 7mm Remington Magnum has a much greater availability than the WSM even here in KY...I don't believe I have ever seen a box of ammo at a Walmart for the SAUM...

Unless you plan to hand load I'd run far away from this round. The SAUM rounds are not in any shape, size or form even moderately pouplar. I have prob ably hunted with 100-150 diffferent guys over the opast 4-5 years, from Alabama to California to Montana. Not a one uses this cartridge. Admitdly I have a bad taste in my mouth for Remington when it comes to developing a cartridge that turns out to be a decent hunting round but never gained popular support .... examples are the 6.5 Rem. Mag., 350 Rem. Mag., and the 8 mm Rem. Mag. Remington more or less gave up on all 3. I would be surprised if they supported any of the SAUM line for more than another decade.

It is rare for someone to be thoughtful enough to follow up on a post after ten years. That is just great that you found a rifle/cartridge combination that suits you!

It is funny that some on the board are still giving you advice on the purchase.

I shoot a .280 Rem. (7x64 clone) for most deer size game, and have even used it for American elk and African plains game with the heavier bullets. What bullet are you shooting?
