Does anybody know what kind of diff there is between the 300 wsm and the 300 saum. In comparing the bullets the Rem is a little longer than the Win. IS one better than the other or are they too close to call? The browning a-bolt only has a 23" barrel so the ballistics table won' t really apply very well to it and I' m still undecided.

Not enough difference to worry about. The 300WSM is available in far more rifles than the 300SAUM. The 300WSM is also far more popular. I would pick the 300WSM and forget about the Remington version.

Is one better than the other? No, not in the real world. However, two major ammo companies load for the 300 WSM, only one (Remington) loads for the 300 SAUM, so you have more choices of factory loaded ammo with the WSM (this doesn' t apply if you handload).
Yeah, the A-Bolt only has a 23" barrel, but if you' re looking at a Rem. Model 7 it only has a 22" barrel (and most ballistics tables I' ve seen in these calibers have been based on a 24" test bbl.). If you are thinking about the Remington Sendero, yeah it' s got a longer barrel (26" ), but to me it defeats the purpose of a " Short & Fat" magnum (to make a light easy to handle magnum, that doesn' t absolutely abuse the shooter when it' s shot). Anyway, for every inch of barrel length you take away you are only talking about losing probably 30-50 fps, not that big of a deal in the real world with these cartridges.
I love my A-Bolt 300 WSM (it doesn' t hurt that it is the most accurate rifle I own). Whichever you choose I' m sure you will enjoy. My advise, pick the rifle first, then figure out what you want to chamber it for.

I think they are both good cartridges and are almost identical in performance, that said the WSM got off the blocks first and is chambered in more firearms, loaded by more companies, available in more different bullet designs, and ammo is available at the local wally world. The 300WSM and 270WSM will probably go the long run while the 7mmSAUM will probably be the Remington offering to last at this point.Don' t sweat an inch of barrel length either way.

Woodseye, what powders have you had good results with in your Savage? I won one the other night in a raffle at a friends of the NRA banquet. Its the 16 bss. Ordered a set of dies and some brass the other day and will give it a good wringing out in a week or two. Has yours shown any preference for bullet weights or powders? thanks. LH
