I always get a kick out of when you ask what people think of Savages you will get posts about custom M70' s with McMillan stocks and Krieger barrels that the action cost a good bit more than any of my savages and the entire gun would go many times the cost.Interesting comparisons,I wonder how much better than 1/2" they shoot for all that $?I guess if you asked in a post what everyone thought of the Bushnell 3200 elite or Nikon Monarch there would be some post and tell you about how much better a S & B or Swarovski scope for 3 or 4 times the price is.Not sure what the point is since anytime you spend 3-4 times the money you better darn sure get something more for it!CRF is great for dangerous game but in 30 years I' ve never had a savage fail to feed or cost me a single game animal.I think a gun that costs as little as $350-400 complete and shoots tight groups out of the box without glass bedding, action blueprinting, new barrels, different extractors, and aftermarket stocks might make some guys a little edgey that had to do that to theirs in order to get those tight groups.I' ve got a savage 12FV that I have a TOTAL of $425 in, that with a 10 minute trigger adjustment and a Bushnell 4200 scope will shoot .500 all day with factory ammo! Two different brands no less(Hornady 55grVX,Winchester 45gr HP),cartridges have never popped out and its never failed to feed or shoot 100%.Hard to believe with one of those " cheaply made" savages [:-]and none of the costly modifications either. Not slaming Winchester or Remington but go get one and take it out of the box and adjust the trigger grab some factory ammo and see how she does.

Remington 700 cheapest made actions??? Surely thats just an opinion boltman. I mean your right about floor plate and trigger guard, but when I talk about actions, I am not talking about that. So how again is the 700 action the cheapest out there?????

At least there is not a dorky lock nut setting the chamber headspace on Sakos, Winchesters, and Remingtons, and Weatherbys, and even Rugers. Come on guys thats cheesy.

Woodseye, I rarely see these savages live up this 1/2" myth. Yes I seen it but also seen it with 450 dollars rem700' s and model 70 rangers. So really what is your point. But you missing the point. Owning a firearm to alot of people, maybe not you, is more than just 1.5" groups (more realistic). Its about the fit, finish, feel of the bolt, and overall how it makes you feel. Not all gun collectors think as you do.

Well first bigcountry, its not a myth and if you ever get up my way I' d be glad to take you out next to the house on my bench and shoot one for you.I got five bolt action savages and they all shoot better than 1 1/2" . Accuracy is not everything you are right, its just a country mile ahead of what comes second in a hunting gun for mefit and finish are wonderful, but I buy my guns to hunt with and you never hear a hunter say " well I did miss that nice buck, but don' t the inletting on my stock look good and don' t that bolt feel like silk when you work it!" And my point was and still is comparing custom guns to a savage costing 1/4 as much on a post about whats your feeling on savages seems way off the point. The " dorky" barrel nut is the reason 1/2" inch groups might be myth to you but are reality to me and 1 1/2" groups might be realistic to you but means I' ve accidently picked up a gun that wasn' t one of my savages before walking to the range. []Cheers and good hunting!

It should be noted bigcountry that you are paying as much for a stock as a complete Savage rifle. Nothing wrong with that but I just wanted to point out that you are starting with a $500 rifle, then spending $500 to rebarrel it, and another $350 on the stock. That' s cool, but there SHOULD be a big difference in a $1300+ custom rifle and a $350 off the shelf gun. I seriously doubt the person posing the original question was pondering buying a Savage or spending more than a grand on a tricked out M70.

BTW, the shells popping out is from too stong a floorplate spring and can be fixed for about $5 and 5 minutes of time. Mine have never done that but I have seen a few that would.

BTW, 2 of my 4 Savage rifles will shoot 1/2" groups with more than one load. One will shoot 1.3" to 1.5" groups at 300 yards depending on me.

The other two are about 3/4" shooters and an occasional 1" group at 100 yards.

Savage accuract isn' t a myth. The myth that it is a myth seems to be propogated by people who feel they must spend 4 times as much on a rifle. I can' t argue with you on fit or finish - but I personally could care less what a rifle looks like.
I' ve seen DOZENS of Savage rifles that shot just as good as any Remington and far better than factory Winchesters and Rugers. The sort of snappy responses from Mnhunter and bigcountry are pretty much what I have come to expect any time a discussion of Savage accuacy comes up.

The heavy barreled variants of the 110 Action are the most accurate rifles I' ve ever shot.

Several have challenged me - they' ve all lost too. One of these days I' ll meet my match - but I' m holding my own for now.

Oh yeah, a BTW - 2000 shots on a 116 in .270 Winchester and the old fisher price gun can still can put 3 in 3/4" Nary a misfire, feeding problem, extraction problem, or lost game animal either.

bigcountry,

Don' t you think the 700 has gone down hill every since Remington introduced that rediculous JLock? I really like the 700s from the late 60' s and 70' s but I think I' ll pass on the current batch.

Mnhunter,

It seems to me this post has gotten under your skin. I reread the thread and I don' t see Woodseye attacking your preference. Rather, it seems to me that you are the one that is attacking preference and degrading choice of rifles.
