The price of shooting my 300 Wby isn't too bad since I handload. I bought brass in bulk and have plenty of it. The powder, bullets and primers I would buy anyway for our other rifles. I bought Remington brass for about $40 for 100 through Midway. This should last me a while.

300 ultra-mag was invented for one thing and one thing only to capture Market Share from Weatherby and in the process slowly put them out of business. Lets examine what an amazing piece of engineering we have here. Get one of the largest rifle cases that will fit in a standard action and cram it full of slow burning powder and then only realize a 100-150 fps advantage over the 300 wthby while burning at minimum 20 grains or more of powder. Wow what an engineering feat heretofore not imagined. I have seen a ultramag break a scope ring(Leupold std front) in half . I thought it was hilarious the guy shooting it wasn't real thrilled , he was taking it pronghorn hunting in Wyoming in a few weeks. Bet he needed all that horsepower for an 80lb pronghorn. How much flatter does it really shoot ? Can anyone truthfully say it is any better and that you can harvest game with it that you can't with the 300 wthby ? As Far as retail prices you are comparing apples with oranges...Weatherby ammo has Norma brass which costs 2x what cheap Remington brass costs. If you were to buy both boxes of brass and chronograph them side by side I bet the difference would shock most of you.

A friend bought one of the first .300 Ultras, and I got a chance to shoot it. I expected it to be unpleasant, because my old .308 Norma (with Niedner steel buttplate) was no fun at all. I was amazed that the .300 Ultra was very pleasant to shoot! Then he sold the .300 Ultra, and bought a .300 Dakota, which produced about 3000 FPS with a 200-grain bullet, just the same as did my old .308 Norma! Boy, have we come a long way in the past 40 years!! I think the .300 Weatherby is still about as good as it gets, in a .30 magnum round!

Keep yore powder dry!!

I shoot a Sako 75 chambered for the .300 Weatherby. When I bought this rifle I was actually looking for a .300 RUM, but the dealer had a deal on the Sako which I couldn't pass up. I just felt the Sako was a much nicer rifle than the Remington.

There's not a dimes worth of difference between these two rounds in terms of performance. I reload, so the cost of ammo is not an issue for me. The .300 Wby is a fine cartridge in my book and I look for it to be around for quite a while.

The Sako is definitely a nice rifle. I have a Finnbear and my dad has a Deluxe. These guns are flawless and smooth.

I have the RUM, and have had the 300Weatherby. I like the RUM better. Not for velocity, but with that funky shape on the brass on the weatherby, I had some trouble. Also, I couldn't get the accuracy out it like my RUM. It wasn't the rounds fault, but like the no belt of the 300RUM. And it has tremidous potential for a wide range of loads from super fast to super slow. I have trouble understanding peoples objection to anything new. Nobody said you have to load this thing with 100gr of retumbo. You know alot of the loads have fast powder like 4350. I think people get emotionally attached to things that have been around for a while. And recoil is not bad at all. I have shot featherweight rifles in 270Win that kicks as much. I know when I went Moose hunting a few weeks ago, I didn't even feel the recoil or hear the blast. I rarely do on a prized animal. Some people if they don't have one, they knock it. As for the comparison, if I had my 300Weatherby back and didn't have chamber problems, I wouldnt have hesitated to take it moose hunting or whatever.

Why not just get a .458 for the ftlbs, etc.?

"Size isn't important, but it HELPS!!!"

.458 Win? Trajectory is not flat enough. 460 Weatherby is a little flatter shooting for those far off whitetail does.

Any Weatherby mag I have ever owned has given me absoluteley no grief accuracy wise and were way more than needed in that dept. If someone has a gripe with it(accuracy) they may have the german variation with the different throat and rifling twist or are flat loading it wrong or who knows they may even have a bum rifle. Hell I had 2 Remington custom shops guns that were disasters until I had them "Accurized". 2 Gunsmiths have told me that properly chambered(300 Wthby) with a short throat that it is the most accurate hunting round they have ever fired. The Gunsmiths are Patriot Arms in NC and Penrod Precision. BigCountry I have no problem trying out new stuff I do won 2 300 wsm but there is nothing the Ultramag does that a 300 wthby cant unless you believe every printed word out of Remingtons mouth.
