A friend bought one of the first .300 Ultras, and I got a chance to shoot it. I expected it to be unpleasant, because my old .308 Norma (with Niedner steel buttplate) was no fun at all. I was amazed that the .300 Ultra was very pleasant to shoot! Then he sold the .300 Ultra, and bought a .300 Dakota, which produced about 3000 FPS with a 200-grain bullet, just the same as did my old .308 Norma! Boy, have we come a long way in the past 40 years!! I think the .300 Weatherby is still about as good as it gets, in a .30 magnum round!
