RE: .22 hornet
I got a new toy about 6 weeks ago. Been tinkering around with it some. So far it has been very accurate and I am very pleased with it. I had a NEF in .22 Hornet, but I didn't like brake open action. Pain in the rear shooting in the prone or off the bench. So I had been eyeballing the Model 40 Savage since they listed it in January 2004. Man what a tack driver. I haven't chronographed any loads yet, just working up accuracy loads. Sor far with 10 handloads and 2 factory loads, that I have shot most have grouped 3/4", 1 has gouped closer to 1/2, and 2 or 3 have grouped in the 1"-1.5" range. These are average 3, 5 shot groups. The accu-trigger is set at 1.5# and it is topped with a 4.5x-14x Nikon Monarch. I can't wait to get bust a few groundhogs this spring with it.

1 Shot, I appreciate your comment on the Savage 40Varmint. I’m seriously thinking about selling my Savage 17 FVSS and getting that rifle. Looks like a nice rifle and I like the laminated stock with it’s 24” barrel. The price isn’t that bad either. I like the idea of being able to reload some shells for the 22 Hornet. I’ll be looking forward to looking at the Savage 40 when our sporting good stores get them in town.

Once you get the equipment to reload it is easy. Starting out I would get the lee anniversary kit. It has everything you would need to reload except for the dies and of course the powder, primers and bullets. The dies I would go with rcbs or lyman. One thing on reloading 22 hornet you do not have to lube the cases. There are different recipes on which powders you can use. It is actually fun to reload. Once you are set-up to reload it is cheaper to reload your own ammo than it is to buy a box of loaded ammo.

I am no expert in reloading by a long shot, but I had no one to mentor me either. I have been at it for 2 years now, and have loaded over 2500 rounds. Not once have I had any concerns for safety or ran in to problems with loads that were too hot. Just read the manuals word for word, and follow the instructions that come with the press and dies and you are off to the races!! I really like the Lee presses and dies, but the rest of my reloading gear is mainly RCBS.
Good luck and enjoy!
