I have never had a deer run more than 20 yards after the shot. And they all have died within 10-15 minutes max.

I'm not saying a perfectly hit deer would only run 20 yards. I agree that 20 -100 yards is more the norm. Nowhere in my post did I say anything about how far a deer should run if hit perfectly.
During the "10 to 15 minute max" Do you sit there and watch the deer suffer?
Is it no more than 20 yards or 20 to 100 yrds the norm? make up your mind.

No matter where or how I shot the deer doesn't matter. I just think you've got big balls telling these guys in this forum that:

"So when the season comes, I put myself in a position to make a perfect shot 9 times out of 10. IMO, the only reason these deer are not killed quicker is for bad shot placement."

You even prefaced it with "I''m probably going to step on some toes with this one" knowing it was just a dumb statement to make.

In Wisconsin we have killed thousands in the CWD area to curb the problem. In our state you can buy two permits a day in addition to your regular license. 100 or 200 deer is not a lot, especially when you are paid by the state to help fight the problem. Look in the newspaper if you still don't believe me.

You even say it takes 10 to 15 minutes for the deer to die with your perfectly well aimed shot (because you practice more than the rest of us) I personally have more respect for the deer than to watch it suffer like that. Look at a watch and time 10 to 15 minutes, it's a long time to sit and watch a deer die. That's why these guys post the question, not because they are bad shots.

There's no sense in continuing this thread with you because you are all over the map. You were right, you did step on toes and obviously from the other posts not just mine. I think when you become a more experienced hunter you will see what we mean when we say not every kill is instant and it doesn't mean the shoot took a wild shot or doesn't practice. Most guys here are serious hunters and care about the sport give them a little credit.

Cybersniper:.....( appropriate handle by the way) ANYWAY, he didn't step on toes that much... we're just always hanging around waiting for something to stir the pot.[8D]

Yes. I have cut deers throats and wow, 10-15 minutes to die on a 20 yard run???I have had tough WI deer run 20 yards and drop but they were dead when they hit the ground. If a wounded deer is capable of running after the shot it WILL cover 100 yards in 2-3 full seconds. These deer should be in the next county. I know a wounded deer will bed down but the point is the story doesn't make sense.

I had to do this a couple weeks ago. It was dark so I couldn't take another shot. I went and got a friend. He stood on the back legs while I stood on the front legs and head. The deer died within a few minutes. I did not like doing it, but that's what had to be done this time. I was very careful of the legs.

Cybersniper,
I guess we can agree to disagree on this one. I never said I was a better archer than anyone here or that I practice more. In fact, most here are probably better hunters than me. My ego is not so big that I have to brag about all the deer I shoot or claim that I am better than the next guy. I am always willing to learn more about the great sport that I love. I was just putting forth my experience and why I have not ever had to slit a deer's throat. I don't know about you, but I have always been taught to stay on stand 30 minutes after a shot has been made. You also hear this from all the pros on all the hunting shows. Therefore if it takes 10-15 minutes for one to expire, that's what I do. It is not pleasant, but it would be smarter (and safer) than getting my butt kicked by a doe like you did. And by the shot placements I have seen at my local deer processer, I would say most archers do need to practice more than they do. But in no way was that to imply that I am a better archer than anyone else. Just a thought that people may want to consider. If a deer is harvested with a good shot, the odds of having to go to the extreme of slitting a deer's throat are slim to none. Period. End of Story. Good Luck in shooting your next 200 deer.

funny you should bring this up...my uncle had seen some people pulled over on the side of the road who had hit a deer. he asked them if he could have it n they said yes. he didnt want to slit its throat in front of the people because the deer was still alive and kicking. so he took a rope and was going to strangle the deer. he wrapped it around the neck a couple of times and started to pull it tight when the doe jumped up. he was holding on to one end and was tryng to get the people who hit the deer to grab the other. they didnt so he let go and the deer started to run then fell and didnt get back up. then he was so pissed he just cut its throat in front of them. neways yes i would cut a deers throat

Yes, I did it once on a doe I spine shot. I had no trouble handling the deer. I don't believe I would try it on a buck, if he threw his head back, you might lose an eye.

I cut a small bucks throat. He had been hit by a car and the driver and his buddy were trying to finish it off by hitting it in the head with a hammer. The deer had both back legs broken and was struggling to move with it's front legs. I pulled over, walked in front of the numbskulls, grabbed the deer by one of his antlers and cut his throat with my pocket knife. He was dead in less than a minute. A much better choice than I made when I finished off a doe my dad shot during ML season. I do not recommend shooting a deer in the head with a .50 cal ML. Too messy. Had to look between its legs to make sure it wasnt a button buck...
