Default would you cut a deers throat?

Im sure we all have made the less then perfect shot on a deer and a second is needed. This was the case a few nights ago to a freind i was hunting with. After we found the deer under a ceder, my friend said just cut its throat and end it. I refused and placed a second shot. even after that he still wanted the cut the throat to end its pain. I recall reading that this is a very inhumane way to take a deer out. the question then was brought up fellow hunters and i seem to stand alone. so what is your opinion and or the facts. thanks.

Have done it a couple of time's,and I can tell you it is much quicker than an arrow.I admit it's not a pleasant experience, but if all you have is a bow it is more humane.

Yes, its OK, this was how I was taught by a Forestry Commission ranger at my first kill (we had to remove a deer from a fenced off plantation of young trees (high deer proof fence - deer was inside when they put the fence up) - loads of cover, so we had to drive it out and shoot it with a snap shot with 00 buck at close range just to stop it) - seemed quite humane in the circumstances (i.e when something is severley wounded) which were admitedly quite unusual - using shotguns on deer here only by special licence in special circumstances thank goodness. Not sure I would want to do it to slaughter livestock like in the old days, but I think its acceptable with a badly wounded animal if done PROPERLY (and thats not always the case!) to a severely wounded animal. I've done it once at the roadside for a deer hit by a car and unfortunalty alive but horribly wounded. (always hope I get the same consideration if I ever get in the same circumstances!) For most animals tho' I think a head shot is obviously faster (if I've had to destroy dogs or sheep on the farm I've always used a double tap tho') , though not neccesarily apropriate for deer of course.

Pound for pound, a deer has about 6 times the physical strength of a man. This sounds like it might be a good way to get hurt. A deer's feet and/or horns can do some serious damage. One must be extremely careful in trying this.

2 years ago my hinting buddy made a not so good shot, after tracking the doe and finding her still alive I just jumped on her back as she was getting up and cut her throat, quick and easy.

Yes i have done it , it does suck tho , often times i will find myself second guessing on y i do it , why i hunt after wrestling around with a wounded deer. But it just makes the good kills just that much more grand.

I've heard of too many guys getting hurt doing that. At least one fellow had a tooth kicked out. I have an uncle who straddled a wounded buck and brought his knife to its throat, before the buck stood up on it's hind legs and threw him off.

A follow-up arrow is much safer for the hunter, and will bring a swift death the animal. If we're trying to shoot an animal with an arrow in the first place, then finishing it with a second arrow should not pose any dilemnas.

i would take the second shot if needed, wounded deer are to unpridictable , to get close enough to slash the throat!

Done it. Did the job well. Tracked down a deer and came upon it with no weapon in my hands. Had to finish it somehow.
