What do you recommend for storing lubricant in the barrel for long term storage. I have used Remington lube but have been told to use peanut oil or any oil not made of petroleum. All suggestions appreciated!

Well as some will tell you they use bore butter, or other non petroleum products. They are worried about the seasoning in the bore being damaged. I do not care if the bore is seasoned. I have never tried to season the bore. I like a nice clean barrel and shoot from a clean barrel.
I personally now use Birchwood Casey Sheath. A poster named Triple Se7en turned me on to this stuff and it is the best thing since sliced bread (thanks Triple Se7en). After I use it, you can see a nice coat all through the barrel and it protects the steel from rust. I make sure the gun is scrubbed and that is through the water bath and some Birchwood Casey Bore Scrubber. After that I use the sheath and put the gun away. I check them every few months.

I remember that thread Cayugad!
That's when I describing the difference between rust inhibitors & rust preventatives like Birchwood Casey Sheath.
Besides making the bore shine, Sheath does not leave a runny film like Breakfree CLP. It seems to bond/dry only hours after applying it. It works great in my centerfires & shotguns. I've been asked to test Lehigh Valley Lube in my MLs until further notice. It works good also, but Lehigh gets tacky after a few hours in the bore & my sabot/bullets are tough loading down the barrel with my ramrod/jag when I forget to alky swab it first.
When I re-order the Lehigh next time, it'll be only for patch lube and swabbing at the range... not for rifle storing. I'm going back to the Sheath.
