Default Long Term Storage

When storing your ML for long periods, I have seen some posters on another board mention storing with the breech plug removed. Wondering if some of the experienced folks here would care to share their opinions on long term (months)storage. I do plan to check the gun every so often during the winter months.

I use a liberal amount of gun oils - so my breechplugs and nipples are never installed. That way, no oils contaminate the plug or nipple.Iput them ina clear sandwich baggie & hang them on the end of the installed ramrod.

My rifle is stored muzzle-down for one week - so excess oil can drain onto a rag below - then turned over muzzle-up for the remaining time. My assortment of gun oils are alternated after every use &the brands I use are:

Birchwood-Casey Sheath
Rem-Oil with Teflon
Breakfree CLP

I make sure to do a tear down cleaning prior to getting ready for long term storage. This includes the removal of the barrel from the stock so both can be thoroughly cleaned, cleaning of the trigger assembly, etc. Once this is done I put it back together, liberally use the gun oil on all parts. Just like T7 I leave mine barrel down on a rag for a period and then flip it over for the duration. About once a month a lightly re-oil my guns just to be safe. When I am storing my ML the breech and nipple are always stored out/seperate from the ML. In my case I have a small toolbox I keep my ML items, this way everything is in a single location and no chance for misplacing.

My favorite gun oil is BC Sheath.

Well, since I only have 2 ML out of 8 that have removable breech plugs, I have to leave them in. IF I were putting one into "long-term" storage where I could not check the bores every couple of months or so, I would make sure they are perfectly clean inside, then use R.I.G., (RUST INHIBITING GREASE) just as I do withmodern rifles.

If I can swab them out every three months or so when not in use, I use Birchwood-Casey Sheath on a saturated patch, and libarally wet the innards of the gun with this stuff. It absolutely prevents rust!
