Well as some will tell you they use bore butter, or other non petroleum products. They are worried about the seasoning in the bore being damaged. I do not care if the bore is seasoned. I have never tried to season the bore. I like a nice clean barrel and shoot from a clean barrel.

I personally now use Birchwood Casey Sheath. A poster named Triple Se7en turned me on to this stuff and it is the best thing since sliced bread (thanks Triple Se7en). After I use it, you can see a nice coat all through the barrel and it protects the steel from rust. I make sure the gun is scrubbed and that is through the water bath and some Birchwood Casey Bore Scrubber. After that I use the sheath and put the gun away. I check them every few months.
