250 Shockwave will shoot through an elk
#1
Got a chance last night to try the 250 gr. Shockwaves on an elk. A band of 8 cows was feeding upwind of a little arroya - we put the sneak on them and, from a tree branch rest at 137 yards, I shot one of the cows broadside in the ribs.
She ran only about 50 feet and went down. To my surprise, the bullet went clear through. Made a wound channel that looked a lot like a 180 grain 30-06. This was the new Omega's first hunt - worked great!

Congratulations of the elk. What kind of powder charge did you have to put under that to make a total pass through? Also you said it hit ribs, so that is doing pretty good. Sounds like you have a lot of elk to eat...

I usually give away most of it - except for the tenderloins. I used my standard 130 grains of Pyrodex pellets, which shoots real well out of both the Omega and the Black Diamonds. MV is probablyover 2000 out of that long barrel.
As much as I enjoy hunting during Colorado's "primitive" season, it was kinda nice to have the 3 X 9 Leupold for a "last minute of legal hours" shot.
After the way the 300 gr. Shockwave performed last year, I would haveexpected to have found the 250 Shockwave just under the hide. This 250 Shockwave is starting to look like one excellent all round muzzleloading bullet - superb accuracy, great ballistic coefficient, light enough to go fast, and tough enough to shoot through an elk.

I think I will try some of them using loose Pyrodex and see what kind of accuracy I get out of them. I have always shot them with just 100 grains and the accuracy was outstanding. I am going to use the 200 grain this year on whitetail deer if the oppertunity comes along. I have a stand on the edge of a hay field and I could get some long shots there...

That 200 gr. Shockwave has intrigued me as well. Bought a pack of them this past summer and wound up giving them to a friend of mine who had adeer license. If they are built as tough as the 250 and 300 grain Shockwaves, might be an ideal deer bullet. For a long shot, I would want to try to get the speed up to 2K or so.
