Bear Hunting Questions
#1
Well I bought my first bear tag today, which means I will be going on my first bear hunt later on this month. I don't know a lot about bear huntings so I hope you all can give me some much needed tips and advice. The only thing that I have been told is that I most bears come out to graze in the open fields in the afternoon and evening. Its illegal to use bait in Montana, so I have decided to just drive along the dirt roads and see what I can find. Anything you can tell me will be greatly appreciated.

Do you have a spotting scope, good Bino's? Best bet is to spend time glassing open hillsides and meadows, don't always just look for black, some black bears are cinnamon, or blond in color. Find out where elk and deer in your area calve and fawn out, try predator calling in those areas, the older bears know where to find food and this is one of their favorites mid spring. Also spend time looking for sign, bears are almost everywhere here in Idaho, but you can narrow your search by looking for scat, freshly torn up logs and stumps, etc....Think like a hungry bear, food is all that is on their mind, use that as your advantage.

not sure how the numbers are in MT, but in canada I did a spot n stalk, we just drove logging roads, looking for fresh sign, just covered the ground, glassed, eventually we saw bears.....finding them wasn't much of a problem, finding a nice boar was a big tougher.
One guide who was recently successful told me he finds a water hole with fresh sign and does big loops/cirles around the water hole and eventually gets lucky....kiilled quite a few bears that way I guess, 1 big boy.
