Gary,

Thanks.. I dont beat myself up hunting alone like I do when I have a friend along and he doesnt tag out.. I do wish Hias hunt wouldnt have been cut short though..a guy really needs about 7-9 days out here...
I know, but I did put this KY hunt together and we all still have are tags[:@] I wish one of us would have scored

Dang Troy, you and Hia certainly gave it the effort. Just goes to show how difficult them things can be. Don't beat yourself up over it, you guys had tremendous action. I know it's on the doorstep of the start of whitetail season here...but is it sept '08 yet? :D

Good luck out there with the whitetails.

RE: 43- Official Team Chaos Thread

Troy,

Sorry to hear about the kill-less hunting, but it sounds like you guys gave it your all and were in a whole lot
of action. Since I've never experienced anything like that, it was exciting to read even without the kills!

It is hard not to get disappointed when you invite people and want to bring it home. I host a
friendly deer hunt for the last 2 years for a weekend and both years no one killed. Of course,
the weather absolutely sucked, these guys don't know anything about hunting, one just
wants to watch wildlife, and the other passed on a doe b/c he wanted to "kill a buck." But we
have a good time anyway.

Good luck with the whitetails.

Jeff, just read your entire thread.. wow, definately not aneasy ordeal, glad you stayed right after her....I posted over there.. I am really happy for you!

Ryan, more action than we had when you guys came out..more herd bulls than I have seen in 4 days in a long time...thebulls overallacted a little different on this years hunt.. most of the younger bulls this year had at least a cow or two..so they acted like herd bulls even though they would normally be loner satellites...

RE: 43- Official Team Chaos Thread

thanks guys, jeff, will, ryan, gary...I am ready to go whitetail hunting this evening.. change of pace..

good luck to everyone hunting today..I am off work and out of here..

RE: 43- Official Team Chaos Thread

WOW, Troy what a great few days of hunting that was. Even tho you didn't kill one, it still had to be fun out there.

Three of the guys I went with to New Mexico 2 years ago want to go back next year, on our own. They have hunted the same area 3 or 4 times with guides. The price of a guided hunt is really getting steep, so they think we should try it on our own. It was all public land where we hunted, and we only saw 2 other hunters when I was there. The units we hunt are pretty rugged and the locals hunt the easier ground. Might have to try it again. Gotta see how things are going around here when it comes time to apply for tags.

RE: 43- Official Team Chaos Thread

checking in.. poor wind last night so I changed plans and took my sons elk hunting ..we hiked a good bit up behind the place and sit and called till dark, we didnt get anything to respond or come by.. Fun night with the boys though.. I'll be back afterwhitetails tonight.

John, thats kinda of how it is here... most locals hunt the lower ground or their private land.. any time I get up high, I dont see many folks ever..we did get in the elk daily....and after talking to a few locals, all Hia and I heard was that the elk werent even talking to them.. only 7 bulls total were checked in up the river which really suprised me.. Sounds like you guys have a nice spot in NM..you killed your bull in there right?

jmbuckhunter 09-25-2007 11:21 AM

RE: 43- Official Team Chaos Thread

Yes, Northern NM around the Taos area is where we hunted. We saw quite a few the year I went. I didn't go last year, but they killed 2 small bulls and a bear.

Great stories & videos guys!! Just thought I would check in on you guys and see whats going on in you neck of the woods. Looks as if everyone will be hunting real soon. I been out with the kids for youth season here. We took one of the neighbor kids the other night and he got his first deer with my sons muzzleloader. It was a little 7 pointer. What a fun night!! I got some pics and video I am going to try to get them up. I get a kick just watching them having so much fun. I was so happy for him and my son was a trooper I was so proud of him that night, he was like a little guide talking his buddy through every step. It was alot of work for me though. My other half is in Canada this week hunting, so I had to get it hung and put away I was to worried about the cape and the meat, it has been real hot here! Then the next morning my son shot or shot at a nice buck with his muzzleloader. Yea, I feel sick its a little my fault, I could not see the shot placement on the buck. I know that the smoke is real heavy after the shot so I will USUALLY sit a little bit away from him when he takes his shot. This time I decided to sit in a new spot and we were side by side. And I USUALLY have the binoculars on the animal when he takes that shot, but I had the video camera in my hand instead. (and I was not focused on the buck at the time) I am so sick I keep going over and over it in my mind. We could not find any blood at all, thats the bad thing with the muzzleloader. When it comes to shot and shot placement he is on about 98% of the time. He shot it before the season and he was dead on at 100 yards. I took out later that day and had him shoot it at 80 yards, just to see if it was off mabey something had happend to the scope but it was dead on. I have combed the woods with family and freinds but nothing. It is so bad that I have been out there just to see if I could hear the crows or see something flying around feeding on him. I guess that is hunting and I will learn from that one!!! We will keep looking until I find him or see him again!!! I could go on and on about it but I am going to make this long storie short. I cant wait until bow season gets here not much longer!! I have not seen alot of the big boys yet seeing lots of does and little bucks. A front is move through and it is suppose to be a little cooler mabey that will help get them moving more. STAY SAFE & GOOD LUCK GUYS!!!

The last week would be the best for buck movement. Unless the weather really messes things up. But I am sure a few bucks will be moving around checking for hot does the last week of Oct. If you can go a week later that would probably be even better. But that would be good for you at home too I recon.

HL, i'd have to agree with the other guys, sounds like a clean miss. Best of luck the rest of this season with you and yours.

last night, I got really close to the stretch buck.. he was bedded about 100 yards from where I set up on the ground. I had no Idea he was that close.. Till he stood up right before dark and started mingling around...he worked to within about 60 yards of my natural ground blind.. then it got dark, I tried grunting to him but he didnt take any interest in it...I waited till he moved around the ridge feeding and snuck out the back door.. he looks really good up close in hard horn..

Back after him tonight if the windworks right..

Thanks guys, I know my son even said mom why is it so hard for you to think I missed? I said because I have seen you shoot. I did get to see the impack or how the deer reacted that second he shot. I just wanted to be sure. I think the shot was pretty quick and if he pulled instead of slowly pulling the trigger...? He looks real steady in the video, but you never know. I would rather have a clean miss than to wound him. I am going to try to put a pic from the other night.
Mikes First Deer!!! Mike is the one in the front my son is the one in the back.

Bare with me guys, I just want to see if I can get this to work, I cant download any thing through this sight so I am going to try photobucket, If the video comes up it doesnt have much on it it was just a little clip I recorded, I just want to see if it will work.

Worked 12 hrs Mon & Tues.

I plan on getting out tonight. But I will be a little later than I want. My monitor shot craps and I gotta pick one up on the way home tonight. Might make it out Thursday and Friday evenings too. Then this weekend for sure. And taking off work on Monday for the IL opener. Then I really get excited.

Good luck with stretch tonight, wind permitting.:)

Saturday was probably the last long ride for the season so more time to hunt. With me on seconds and her on first we only see each other on weekends so I have to spend some time with her ;) Honestly though if I wanted to hunt both days she'd be fine with that....so she says. Although she is the one that sent me the funny motorcycle ad :D

I plan on getting out Friday-Monday !

RE: 43- Official Team Chaos Thread

Hope you guys get some relief from the heat - gonna be in the high 80's here for a while.

Well, I squared away a spot for opening week - should get 2 or 3 afternoons in next week after work
(opening is Monday) and will hit that spot the weekend of Oct. 13th. Only costs me some beer. :D
I missed a doe there last year, so I'm hoping to at least do that.

Next weekend (Oct. 6th), will hunt hard pretty much all day Sat and Sun. on my family land. Good news
is food plots were planted about 2 weeks ago (we planted late this year b/c of no rain in past 2 years)
and we apparently timed it right cause we've been getting good rains.

Got a secret spot that has not been hunted back in the woods where a ditch and canal meet and the
canopy opens up. Deer sign everywhere. Can't wait to sneak back in there. The spot is below the "Clear
Cut Woods" (which we didn't cut this year - thank God), if you go to that bottom right corner. The newly
bushogged trail to that area comes all the way from the North side of those woods and runs almost down
the middle of that tract. The wind usually blows out of the N or NE. I'm thinking of going only when it's
as much out of the East as possible. Do you think this would be a better morning or evening stand location?
I'm thinking I might bump a lot of deer trying to get back there in the morning, especially since they feed in
that clover and CRP and crop. But if I get past them it could work.

I know this is a long post, but I'm bored waiting for the season to open. :D

RE: 43- Official Team Chaos Thread

Got home yesterday and just felt like I needed to move some stands for this last week of early archery season. So I did just that instead of hunting.

John, good luck today and Friday..

Rob, my neighbor just put his Harelys away for the winter. We have rain and 20 degree drops in temps starting Friday. Good for deer hunting, poor for riding.. Good luck hunting

Will, good to hear you'll be out next week. I myself would be careful hunting that in the morning if you're gonna let too many deer know your in there. Anychance you can enter from a different location.. I can't see the photo..(red x here) Nevertheless, good luck man!

I've got one last day of warm weather today then the weather man says FALL has arrived as of Friday. I can hunt till Sept 30..then everything is shut down cept for bear/Turkey till Oct 10.
