Default going hunting, first time...

Hey guys, Noob here. So I'm 35 years old and live in Florida. I went deer hunting with my father in West Virginia for several years as a kid (12-16 years old.) recently I came to really miss hunting and decided to go back to my fathers and get some of my rifles to do some hunting with some friends here in Florida...

Well I think the primary rifle I went and got maybe a bit oversized for the deer here in Florida but wanted to get some opiions as I know little to nothing about this gun nor what type of ammo I should purchase...

I have a Ruger M77 7mm rifle... Just got it outfitted with a Bushnell Elite 4200 scope... can anyone give me some pointers as to what kind of rounds I should be looking at purchasing or share some wisdom on this rifle?

Thanks!

You will be able to reach out and touch them at a loooooong range with that weapon.
IMHO, a weapon is only too powerful or overkill if it destroys too much meat. Other than that, if it does the job, how can it be wrong?!?!

know anything about what type of rounds I should be looking at. I guesstimate the avg. size buck down here is 80-120lbs.

I also picked up a SKS, and a .222. Neither looks to have the size to consider deer hunting with. So I'm off to go hunting next week with the 7mm. But, like I said I know little/nothing about what I'm looking for regarding ideal shells for my prey.

I'd ask in the gun forum.
They have threads like this: http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=2440664there.

Get to the range, and fast! Pick up about 3 different kinds of ammo. Get sighted in and then do some three shot groups with each kind. I would say anywhere between a 140grain to 160 grain for 7mm will be fine. If you dont get some tight groups, go get some other kinds of ammo. Like stealthyone said ckeck out the gun forum and good hunting!!!!!!!

Well you have one of the most accurate guns ever made topped with one of the best scopes ever IMO (I speak from experience on the scope) so you should be ready to knock em down. I would probably try a few different brands of 140 and 160 grain shells and see which gives you the best groups. Welcome back to the sport and remember to have a little fun out there!

try the winchester ballistic tip in 140 gr. anything above 150 gr. is probably too much on smaller deer.
