Welcome.
My first year the only deer I saw were over 80 yards away and running. If he was really that big, I can't wait to hear about him next year.
Since you are new, I will also offer little advice: scout, use the wind, and take only good shots.
Sounds like your decision to wait was good one. You might try calling or rattling him in closer next time.
Keep 'em all in the Bull.

Welcome to the world of hunting. It happens all the time. Have fun and next year when you see him, and he's bigger, you may get another chance at him.

it probably was a good omen that you could'nt get a shot at that spike. next year he should be a bigger racked buck. welcome to the world of whitetail hunting. once you take your first deer you will be hooked for life.
