2nd YEAR HUNTING
This is my 2nd year for hunting white tail. Last year I took 10-days off work to go hunting and came up with nothing. I was hunting from the ground on public grounds. Saw some deer but they were too far for me to get a decent shot off, never shot my gun during shotgun season. The one chance I had for a kill was when I was hunting the edge of a corn field and the deer saw me before I saw him. I was hoping that it would come out on to the field but it was gone. This year I'm using a climber and baiting deer with corn and apples.
Do you all have better luck hunting from the ground or from a tree stand? If you're hunting from the ground, are you constantly on the move or do you pick a spot and stay put? If you hunt from a stand how often do you move your stand to a different location?

not that I'm an expert: the higher up, the better. Deer can't see you as well and scent is better controlled. As far as ground hunting: the less you move the better. You have to find a spot and hunker down for as long as possible before moving. As soon as they see you, and they'll see you long before you see them, they're gone.
Good luck and report back with success!

Its my understanding that MN has a rule against baiting, but I dont reallly know all that well because I've only been hunting this state for a year. I'm in a differant area, all the way up in Duluth. Im not saying baiting is right or wrong, but check the rules just in case Im right. Just to cover your but cause its a big fine up here.

I'm only 16 so I don't have much experience but I hunt in a stand. I think in a stand you can see farther. The area where I hunt it's with family and friends so we leave stands up all year long. We probably have about a total of 8 or 9 stands in the woods. Our stands get moved rarely, but that's only because we have so many.
I would think if you put the stand in one area and hunted that area for a while and you do get something then I would suggest moving the stand to a different spot for a while. Once you get something they know so the deer won't go that way for a while. Hope I helped ya a lil. Good luck out there!

I got permissin to hunt a 180 acre 5 year old clear cut this year, and when i got permission i went ahead and bought two 15 ft ladder stands and put them up 2 months before season started.first day i hunted it i saw six does about 100 yds away in a log road but they was way to far to shot at through the brush.so next morning i see the same thing.so i go ahead and walk over to the road the next morning and low and behold here they come and i was sitting on the ground and i took one of em.And in my second stand i have only seen 4 deer in it this season and i have hunted it alot and it is ina good spot alot of deer sign(droppings and scrapes). So the day before thanksgiving i was off to my stand and i got the idea that i would sit on the ground about 150 yards from it and i got settled in at about 3:30 and sat till dark up against a oak tree with nothing concealing me but my own camoflage and a ten point 3 1/2 year old buck walk right at me and stops 35 yards from me.well needless to say i have him at the taxidermist.Ive been hunting now for about 5 years and have taken 5 deer and only 2 of those was from a stand.I just have better luck hunting from the ground.I think the key is to wear the right camo and to stay completly still and i mean still.

Personally I have hunted from the ground, but what no one has mentioned is location, I think this determines whether you should hunt stand orground, I hunt hard woods, and when I dont im in the woods facing a field, I shot 2 deer this year in the woods. In the field I have a ground blind, and have had no luck, Im investing in a 15ft. ladder stand for the field. But absolutely dont move until the lights go out.

i totally agree, its all about location! if you have a low canopy with not many climbable trees, then go ahead and make a quick ground blind out of tree limbs or whatever you got. dont sell your self short on imagination in the woods. my dad always taught me that if you have the wind right and you make a half way decent attempt at camo, the deer wont know what hit em. ive killed at least half of my deer from the ground, half of those were killed at less than 40 yds and they never even looked at me. obviously if your on a huge clear cut with 3 ft brush on the ground, you might be looking for a good climber on a nice tall tree.
