I generally always have a grunt tube or a bleat call with me and it seems to work pretty well as long as they are walking or trotting. When running I usually will whistle or I have even yelled STOP before when really desperate.

If I have my grunt in hand, I will grunt at them or just make a grunt sound on my own. Either way stops them dead in their tracks. I have never whistled before though. I will have to try that.

I have been lucky so far and havent had to stop a deer yet to get a shot, but alot of my family members have, my dad usualy will just shoot them on the move and is realy accurate, but others like me dont feel comfortable shooting moving deer. A wistle of some kind of grunt usualy does the trick. I think about everyone agrees with eachother.

When the moment of truth arrives, you must already be ready to shoot. The only advice I can offer echos what others have said, and adds a bit of humor. Grunt, whistle, speak, shout, holler, yell, heck...break wind if all else fails. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
Good luck with what ever you try. In these situations, trying something always outweighs doing nothing.

I installed a traffic light with an infrared remote control right near my stand on the heavily used deer trail. When the deer come in, I click the remote to turn the traffic light red. The deer stop and wait for the light to turn green. Works perfect. In a pinch, I've used a homemmade stop sign but it doesn't work that great in low light conditions. Oh sure, occassionally I'll have these young "teenager" deer run the red light but that's okay since I want those deer to grow bigger racks anyways.
Give it a try.
