RE: deer hunting question
Perhaps if you could tell us what kind of terrain/cover you will be hunting in, and what kind of shots you expect. In close cover a .35 Rem is a good gun, as is the 45-70 (with handloads), open areas/long shots call for a 270 or maybe a 6mm Mag. Good all around guns include 30-06(my fav), 308 WM, 7mm mag, the list goes on. First you have to think about what kind of shots you will be getting, then narrow the list down, then see which gun you feel the most comfortable with.

If you could only have one rifle to hunt deer I would suggest the 30-06 which can take any game in North America, and its not an overkill. You can also find a wide selection of shells at any ma and pa service stations throughout the country. I would stay away from the 45-70 or the 300 mag unless you wanted hamburger. Good luck <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

RE: deer hunting question
Simple. The caliber that will drop any game in North America with one well placed shot. Very good ( if not best ) chambering is.....................can we have a drum roll please.............and the answer is.........thurty aught six.
No attacks please just my 2 cents worth.
I'm in a very deep and personal relationship with my '0-6.
WWII era, genuine German Mauser. All numbers match. (No receipe of multiple donor guns here folks) Sporterized, the right way in the early 1960's. Shortned and properly crowned barrel with a nice rifled blade sight. Modified bolt to shorten throw and clear scope. Old Galaxy scope still works wonderfully on it's tip off mount. The ABSOLUTE most valuable part of this gun..........it was my Father's and he left it to me when he passed.
I don't shoot it as often as I should. But I keep it oiled and whenever I handle it...I think of Dad!
Miss ya Dad. Don't worry, me and your Grandson will get one for ya.
Heck, what am I telling him for? He'll be there to see it for himself!

RE: deer hunting question
I've used both a .308 for moose and deer and found them very effective for both without being an overkill. Of course I like to use my old british .303 too but I try not to since it was passed on from my father. Hard not to sometimes though...:-)

All the aboved mentioned are great. Each has its pros. and cons. Its all in personal preference. I have used most mentioned and I prefer a good old fashion 30-06.
