Question on long shots?
I read the topic posted earlier, and I thought I would start a new thread since that one has gotten a little long, and I wanted to ask a question. What size scope do ya'll use? I saw that ya'll take shots at up to 300yds, and I was wondering what size scope ya'll use for that type of shot. I have a 3x9x40 and I would be confident at up to 175 to 200 range, but I don't think I could take one at much farther. I am sure that all of you that have taken those shots have practiced them, but I wanted to know if the scope factored in at all. Thanks!

RE: Question on long shots?
i grew up using a straight 4 power scope and have taken many deer in the 400 yrd range without a problem, my dad and brother still use a straight 4 power. i recently upgraded to a multi power scope 4-12 power so i can use it in place of spotting scope and binos, the less i have to carry the happier i am, i only shoot using the 4 power setting.
with all the new scopes out with focus, zoom and wind adjustments i've seen allot of people miss their shot opportunity cranking on the nobs. i addition shooting when shooting at long distance with and after looking at high power i think people underestimate the range and end up shooting low.
so i like low power but have to say the difference in the clarity of the image of a tasco compared to a leopold is a lot and would recommend going with the higher end.

RE: Question on long shots?
I use 2.5x10x50 and 3.5x10x50 on my 2 main rifles for deer, pronghorn or other bigger game hunting. I stated that I wouldn't bat an eye at 300 yard shot and I don't. I practice a lot of long range shots and in the field will only take those long pokes with a solid rest and good broadside shot opp. Most of my deer are 200 or under, but where we live one minute bush, the next wide open and miles to see. In my neck of the woods out to 250 is considered normal, not long.
I believe in good quality optics. I also like 50MM objectives vs 40. bigger and heavier, but clearer and brighter...with a much more refined field of view. Just my opinion though. I know many of guys who shoot the with 40's and lesser scopes...each his own. I always suggest buy as much scope as you can, don't settle. A good scope will follow you through your rifles and pay it self back time and time again.
Something else to consider if you are long poker is the caliber, but I won't get into that one.

RE: Question on long shots?
If you can't get any closer than 400 yrds to shoot an animal then stay home or get another guide. I do not have any scope on any of my rifles but I do use the Williams open sight and if I can get 150 yrds, its a gonner.

121553, I guess I better stay home, since you the man!!!!! The guy asked if scopes and long shots are equal...where do you a short shooter and no scope fit in the picture? ( oh your opinion is welcome, the other crap I don't think helps)
Sometimes getting closer is not an option, especially 150 yards. How do you cover 250 yards of flat, bald ass grazed land with several sets of eyes and a poor wind. Oh I see you just fold tent and head home, like the rest of us slobs..hey. I personally wouldn't shoot 400 yards with irons either. Just cuz you don't have or use a scope don't sit on your horse and preach the gospel....my guess you'll get some smacking around by others on that comment.
Oh here is 1, lets count.

RE: Question on long shots?
Skeeter, What part of the big "Iced Land" are you from. I'm in Alberta and this is my second year staring today! (it's after 12 ) I don't get to shoot tomorrow, but I will be out helping with a few deer drives! That is the main way we hunt (with about 3 or 4 hunters) well, at least our group. Especially afer the sun s high in the sky. I was a poster last year and had deer within 10 yards of me. I opted to pass a few spikes and forkhorns and I didn't have the clip in when it counted <img src=icon_smile_blush.gif border=0 align=middle> but this is another year. That was a lot f bull**** but what I'm trying to say is. I can understand why you have to take the 300+ shots, I passed those up from inexperience. But you can get close if you are in the right spot and with a little luck...In your stand or as a poster (how ever you hunt) you can get close and don't nessecairrily need those 300+ shots. If they're there and you feel comfortable with the shot, Take it. You need at least a 4X scope though. Cause a deer at 300 yards is hard to see, it must me magnified to some extent for somewhat of an accurate shot...
Sorry bout the long post, really excited about tomorrow...er...TODAY! got to go to sleep now see ya!

RE: Question on long shots?
As Txhunter said, The key to any shot is practice and knowing your equipment. I live in west Texas, we have very little tree cover and lots of flat land, so a long shot is not all that unusual. I slowly started taking longer shots, only after years of practice. Each year I feel a little more comfortable taking longer shots. I use 3*9*42 scope on my 30-06 and feel very comfortable up to 250 to 300 yards. I have only shot one deer up to 300 yeards and that was last year. It was the deer of my dreams, it was crossing a wheat field at about 300 yards. I knew the distance because this is the field I use to target practice on. The deer droped on the spot. Double lung shot. I do know a lot of people around here hunt prong horns. If you cant make up to a 300 yard shot, you mid-as-well stay home. That is, at least in these parts.

RE: Question on long shots?
I use a 3x9x40 leopold. I have taken up to a 250 yard shot and that was in the neck. I shoot year around though just because i enjoy shooting. The scope factors in somewhat, but the most important thing is that you are comfortable and confident in your shooting and your gun. An inexperience shooter can have the top of the line scope and gun and still not shoot well.
