I use a 3x9x40 leopold. I have taken up to a 250 yard shot and that was in the neck. I shoot year around though just because i enjoy shooting. The scope factors in somewhat, but the most important thing is that you are comfortable and confident in your shooting and your gun. An inexperience shooter can have the top of the line scope and gun and still not shoot well.
