In our deer camp you will hardly ever see anything smaller than a .270, most use 7mm mag, 30/06, .300 win mag., .338 Reum. qnd 375 H&H. (we always know when he shoots a deer).

Zrex-I live in upstate New York,I have shot deer with shotgun,rifle and for the last few years,muzzleloader.I have shot them in the chest,shoulder,neck and even the rear.The secret to the rear shot is aim for the tail.You will hit the spine and pass through to the neck.I have passed on a number of shots too.You should not sterotype.I do not do that.Another thing I do not do is shoot deer from a tower stand 30 yds from the feeder.
