i will take any shot i can with a rifle because regardless of the angle a rifle will penetrate deep enough to get to the vitals.

I am from the North - in Mich. and I have even been accused of " what did you do wait for em to move that front leg forward so you could get a text book shot". Guys have been able to identify my kills hanging on the buck pole by just seeing where the deer was hit.

A rifle will take a deer down at most angles as long as you can see the vitals. Neck shot is good as long as your gun is steady. Butt shot, no way. Oh, Zrex, I'm from texas and there is a reason they call it the "texas heart shot" But man live life and don't take everything personally. Everywhere on this earth you will find people like that. But do not accuse an entire section of the country! Some people in the North, South, West, East, all the combinations in between, will all take a bad shot. Be proud of your roots, don't be stereotypical.

Everywhere is going to have someone that takes "bad shots" to someone else. There isn't a rule book saying where (On the body, not like andarea ex. Michigan, Wisconsin, or Indiana.)you can shoot a deer. Some people are going to be consider irresponsible to others but all you can do is wait for them to make a mistake. I know it's hard but, stop thinking so much about other people unless you are in danger.

The north or ( yank) comments are only in fun. just a little poking, a way to get this thread jumping.
But I really do see a trend, guys up north like big big guns, down south or here in Texas espicially, I see a lot of smaller calibers, down to the 22-250 , 222, 223 being used. I have never disscused marginal or room for error shots, until i got on this board. Seems a lot of people here will take any shot because they are using a 30-06 or whatever. It's always brought up, room for error or marginal shot placement.
thats how it seems anyway.
What ever happened to " nah I didnt have a good shot" Ill see him again.

In the N east people have to take a chance on a shot sometimes if they want meat on the table. They may not get another chance at a deer all season and the woods are packed on the first couple days and the weekends to boot. The need to anchor that deer down with the largest gun one can handle to secure his feast from running off.

Here is my thought on this. Yes I'm sure you see a lot of people using 22-250, 222, 223 which are smaller cartridges. You are also shooting at smaller deer, correct? I have seen many bucks up here in the 275-300 pound range. Whats a big buck down their, 175?

But it is really a moot point for me. I'm limited to shotgun only. Not too many animals in North America can take a well place .50 slug and not drop pretty quick.LOL

But I agree with you on one point. I see too many times where hunters make a bad shot. And mostly because they never take the time to become profficient with their weapon. It is very common up here where a sabot slug will run you $2-3/round. The guys get cheap and don't shoot enough. Just enough to get their gun sighted in. And they fail to take into account the wind factor on those big, heavy, slow slugs.JMHO
