DD, you can learn a lots about a person while in deer camp, or hunting! Its not a great situation, but at least you know what he's like, and it doesn't have to happen again!
If there are any doubts, you might talk to him, and he may feel as badly about it as you do! From what you've said though, I doubt it!
If he's not the kind of person you'd like to have hunting with you, then don't invite him again!
Again, you can learn a lots about a person by their hunting habits! To me there is something wrong about a person (hunting-wise anyway), who always wounds deer, but never recovers them!
I've heard some hunters talk like it is a measure of success to shoot, or shoot at a deer! You hear things like, " I shot a deer," or I found blood, but no deer!"
When you hear this from the same people over, and over, it makes you wonder!

BTW, as to finishing off a deer after dark, I'm sure it is illegal here, and probably in most other places too! But, I'd rather be "humane," and end the deer's suffering, rather than go by the letter of the law!
To the "purist'," this IS technically poaching, and if the Game Warden catches me, and doesn't see it as something that HAD to be done, I'll live with the consequences! It is just one of those rare times that "ethics," and "legal," don't see eye-to-eye!

DD,
I like your attitude about dealing with wounded deer. Its also nice to hear other folks concede that the line between legal and ethical can sometimes blur.
By the way DD, dunno if the "hairlips the pope" line is a local saying in your neck of the woods, a reference to the David Allan Coe song, or both. No matter, I like it.

Just so I'm clear on this...was the nightcrawler hunter wearing blaze orange? Isn't that the requirement during deer season?
As for the original, but not forgotten, subject of the thread--sounds like the guy had a good old button-buck fever brain fart. Probably saw the button by himself, had no other obvious reference to gauge the size, and said "that's a doe". The guy may have been hunting several times over the years, but doesn't sound like an experienced hunter. Just an experienced sitter. Also had to be thinking that having been put in a hot spot by the good Doctor would be his best bet for taking a deer, and coming out of the woods empty handed was not an option. If he's worth his salt, he knows that he screwed the pooch and will bring the subject up on his own. Otherwise, he'll probably be too ashamed to ask to go again.
BTW, Doc, did you swap your ex to NY? Sounds like he's got a serious burr when it comes to you!

I have to agree with NY on this night hunting thing. Not good. The laws are there for a reason and I obey them. I would hate to be on the receiving end of that citation for shooting at night. How the hell is a Warden going to know if you shot a deer during legal hours or NOT. I have left plenty of deer overnight to expire. As a bowhunter its kinda a tool of the trade, IMO!
Also I think DD was a little harsh on the guy. Not everyone is an expert straight out of the box!
I know I'm not!
