Dang, just about had one last night! Dang arctic fox came out of nowhere and spooked a huge herd that was coming in right on top of me. I had bulls within 50 yards, and they got real spooky all of a sudden. I looked behind me and had an arcitc fox stalking me! The fox worked his way around me and spooked the entire herd. Amazing that a little 5 pound fox could make 500 head of caribou run like they were being attacked by aliens.

Maybe tonight. [8D]

Cool deal on the king Phish, I' d love to hook into another.

I was out char fishing the last two nights. I caught four on Saturday night, but the wind had picked up and the temps dropped last night, so I only spent an hour getting blasted by winds fresh off the ice pack before I called it a night and went bou hunting. Those are some good fighting fish though. The biggest I pulled in was about 24" .

ABM,

Yeah, the permit system gets frustrating at times, but like you and me, I know there is others that come up empty every year. I really just see it as a bonus anyways, since I can still go hunt the animals I want year after year. The benefits of Alaska hunting!

Good luck on your caribou hunts. I' d go up there and hunt, but for me it' s a long drive and would be one heck of a pack back and forth on that 5-mile corridor with my rifle!

Hello All--I too made a donation to ADF&G, but imagine my surprise yesterday when I opened the newspaper to see who got the coveted 8 Berner' s Bay moose permits and saw my brother-in-law' s name?! [] Called him and my sister early yesterday morning to tell them, and my normally mild-mannered brother-in-law was doing a little jig of joy. [&:] Lucky Dog. Hey, at least, as his favorite (okay, only) sister-in-law, I' ll get to share in the moose meat!

Juneau is spectacular today...clear blue skies, expected high of 75 (none of that 100+ Vegas stuff!!). Now if I was only independently wealthy and didn' t have to work....

It' s 115 in Vegas today as the high, but at least there is good news in that tomorrow it is only supposed to reach 111. [X(][X(][X(] I blame my wife for this.

Good to hear that the good guys pulled a few permits this year. One of these years I hope to be pleasantly surprised to find a permit under my name. Like you said bear, at least we still get to hunt!

I' ll be heading off the slope tonight and leaving Monday at midnight for Vegas, so I' ll be off line for a while. I' m headed to Colorado on the 23rd of July to see family, so at least I only have to deal with the Vegas heat for a week before I get a break from it. Hopefully I' ll still be alive at the end of the month for the caribou hunt!

SEAK and I went out last night and saw one bull. We put a 2 hour long stalk on him, and SEAK got to draw back on him once, but that' s about it. Not a bad time though, we managed to sneak in range on the wide open tundra. That dang bou wouldn' t pick a direction to go, he kept wandering around aimlessly. Ah well, just nice getting out there.

ABM - Boy, I' d be losing my lunch if I had to put up with that kind of high temperatures![] Good luck - hope you survive. My wife gets back on the jet tomorrow night from Seattle & Victoria, she said it was even hot down there! My blood must be too thick for high temps. Glad to hear that you had SEAK out and about, getting some exercise. That bull was just plain lucky - if he' d had a plan and kept moving in just one direction, you probably would have him hanging up somewhere cool about now!

Nim - I' m striking-out so far on finding transportation in to the draw hunt area for caribou. I will put in some phone time in over the weekend and see what and who I can find (wish I knew more people up in your neck of the woods). I' d like to do my part to keep the herd thinned, but its pretty awkward being over one this side of the State and trying to get important arrangements like these worked out. Time will tell. Have you arrowed any pike lately?

PHISH-ON- I ARROWED 4 WHILE I WAS HOME, THE GUY I HAVE THE BET WITH GOT 12 [X(] HE SHOT 2 OVER 7LBS AND HIS BIGGEST WAS 8-1/2. ONE OF THE 7 POUNDERS WAS 28-1/2 LONG...IT HAD A 11 INCH RAINBOW IN IT' S STOMACH[][X(][&o]. I WAS CHASING ONE THAT I LATER FIGURED IT WAS PROBABLY WAITING FOR THE DUCKLINGS IN A NEST 10 YARDS AWAY.... PROBLEM IS I DID NOT SEE ANY BABIES. JUST THE ADULTS COMING OFF THE NEST. SO I THINK HE ALREADY GOT THEM ALLJUST DID NOT REALIZE IT YET. SURE WISH I COULD HAVE HIT HIM.
DO YOU KNOW WHEN YOU WILL BE TRYING TO HUNT THE CARIBOU?
TALKED TO SEAK TODAY...STILL BOATLESS BUT SEEMS TO BE HAVING A GREAT SUMMER WITH THE KIDS. HE IS UP AT WORK NOW.
LATER PAT

Nim - Boy, those pike sound like regular garbage disposals - they eat everything that moves. Actually, that kind of bow action sounds like a whole lot of fun to me. Every one you kill is a " plus" for everything else in the water around it!

The dates for the caribou tag hunt is from 8/10 to 9/20. That' s why I am concerned - time is running out on me. I expect a couple of answers tomorrow. I' ve got my fingers crossed.

Yes, I see SEAK' s boat still on blocks. Mine is too. I have to wait for the hydraulic trailer that is occupied with a re-power, but should get mine launched mid-week. I' m looking forward to using the color video machine I installed today - it will be nice to be able to tell what I am looking at with a machine like I used to use commercial trolling. The coho fishing is already starting to pick up, so soon I hope to be occupied supplying frozen fish for the daughters down in Oregon[

PHISH-ON- THE BOWFISHING IS ALOT OF FUN ONE DAY I GOT PROBABLY 50 SHOTS. AND ONLY 2 FISH SCUFFED UP 3 OTHERS) SO IF I COULD ACTUALLY HIT THE FISH THEN I COULD REALLY BE HELPING THE TROUT AND SALMON AS WELL AS OTHER CRITTERS THAT THEY DEVOUR(SP).
I' LL KEEP MY FINGERS CROSSED FOR YOU AS WELL.

Hey all, we made it to Vegas. Took a picture of the temperature today which showed 123 above. It hit 125 as the high, and I managed to survive loading and hauling about 1,000 pounds of our stuff we had shipped down around the parking lots and stairs into the apartment. A bit warm out, but in all honosty, not as bad as I had expected it. I would get tired easier and faster, but as long as I didn' t walk on the pavement barefoot, or touch anything that might be a tad too hot, I did fine. It' s weird right now because it is dark outside. Haven' t seen that in a couple of months.

Got some king fishing in the other day before I headed south. We got some lures wet, but didn' t manage to hook into a bright red chinook on the Chena. They were rolling around us, and in the few hours we were there, only two were caught. They just weren' t interested, but I can' t blame them.

Nearly 1am here, so I' m off to bed. Nim, congrats on the pike and good luck with the rest of the season. Hope you manage to catch up to the competition! Phish, I hope all works out for the bou hunt. We are headed out the 31st for a short week of hunting, so hopefully we can get some bou meat down your way somehow this year.
