RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Good evening everyone. Had a great time in Mexico but its good to be back home. Looks like we are making good progress in passing up our friends from up north.
Welcome Gator. $800 for a full bear mount?! I just got my bear rug back and it was about $650, and that was for an average sized bear. I would have thought a full mount would be a lot more than a rug. Sounds like a good deal to me. |
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Man, I had no idea that a bear rug costs so much. I think the wife would have a fit if I spent that much money on any animal carcass. Hell, I'd have a fit if I spent that much on a carcass unless it was a massive elk mount. I may have to rethink this bear rug stuff. Maybe I'd better check with area taxidermy shops ahead of time to see if I could afford to mount my kills. Just out of curiosity, what's the going rate on an elk shoulder mount?
Gator, I do remember taking the kids for drives around Area 10 on rainy days and seeing 2 or 3 deer every time. Area 10 is the area that starts at 176th and goes down Hwy 507 to just across the train tracks on the right hand side of the road. If you come in the East Gate, you go past the guard post and the marsh on the right to take the next right. Then you drive back and veer right heading back towards Hwy 507. You run along 507 for a little ways as you enter Area 10. I don't know what the name of the marsh is, but that may be it. I've been told there are lots of big bucks in that area, but they hold tight in the thick stuff. I'll probably go back once or twice during the early season to see what I can see. Found some really well used trails and beds along the marsh. There is some good bear sign in there too. And by all means Wayne, Protect Your Melons! That's going a little too far in my opinion too. You give 'em an inch and they'll take a mile. Pop a cap in him. Hunt hard, live right, and tell your kids you love 'em! RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Hey Moose,
The Taxidermist I know told me he would chargs 100.00 a ft for a bear rug. He also said that the measurement was from tip of nose to tail. Not standing, or stretched from toe to toe. So a 5 ft bear would be 500.00 and full mount would be 800.00. I think but not too sure that there is alot more work that goes into a rug. I have to get down there to make sure he is still in business, cause I cant get him by phone. Anyone from Centralia area around??? Slee I know that area you are talking about, I hunted waterfowl there one time on the marsh. My duck season was limited out there since they wont let the non-military out on the base now. I also heard 21 was real good hunting and it's a little further out. All the deer I have seen in there, walk along the little roads inside the property. Was out there the other day on 15 letting the dogs swim in that little pond, and the fish were jumping all over the place. Water levels are low but still enough to put a small boat out there. Well take it easy and I will let you know when I get ahold of Ralf. Later BRian |
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Wayne - - Tiger Muskies, huh? Those guys put up a great fight ! We'll let you know when we head up that way. Heck we can even use Rudy or Nani as "Muskie fetchers" when they get close to the boat! :) Good Hunting (& fishing)!, - Rob

RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Gator - $100 to $110 a foot is the going price for a bear rug around here. I just figured a full body mount involved a lot more work. I had my rug done at the Bear's Den south of Tumwater on the Little Rock Road. He did a nice job. He has also done a couple of bobcats I shot. They were about $60 each, although they were tanned only - not rugs.
Wayne and Pointshoot777 - You guys have fun on Curlew. I fished there a few years back and caught some nice trout. I saw one of those tiger muskies from the dock at Pine Point Resort. He was just a little guy back then but I bet he is a keeper now! I bet that would be some fun fishing if you hooked into one of those things. I hear Pine Point Resort is no longer in business. Anybody know anything about that? |
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
MooseEyes - don't know about Pine Point. It's been several years since I was up at Curlew and we stayed at the state park. Caught some nice little rainbows that were good eating though. Good Hunting & Fishing!, - - Pointshoot

RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Just curious but what all is involved in making a rug compared to just a tanned hide? If I am lucky enough to take a bear this season, there is no way I can pay $100-$150 per foot for a rug. The wife would kill me and have me skinned.

RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Gator, I actually hunted deer in 20 and 21, and even looked for an elk there. I have a hunting partner that was involved in the pheasant release hunts, and has seen them there. He saw a huge bull and about 10 cows in one of those drop zones in 20. One of his friends had to stop and let 15-20 elk cross in front of him on his way to release birds one morning last season. I saw a good bit of deer sign in there too. Unfortunately, that is a big dog training area and pheasant release spot. There may be a pretty good crowd of people in there on the weekends.

RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
What's going on today??? Hello Robb how are things Goin, and the car, How do yuo like it. You need to get back over here to do some hunting.
Slee, I hear ya, But I told my wife if I killed a bear I would give the pelt to my partner since he wants one real bad. Problem is, I told my wife that and she said no way!!! Even after I told her how much it was going to cost, she said she wanted a bear rug. I have a real cool idea for a cougar, but I have to kill one first. Haven't heard aboout the elk in those areas, but my season is a full week down south in the packwood area. If I go archery, I might be looking to hunt a little closer some. Hey Moose, I will ask him again. I think he is cheap cause he doesn't have all the extra expenses of a business that has to pay a lease. This guy does a nice job. Like I say, he had some African Game that was waiting to be picked Up. Also a cool bobcat, full mount sitting on a nice piece of wood. Well gotta go to work, take it easy BRian |
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Gator - wish I had that problem w/my wife! I can't get her to eat anything that didn't come in seranwrap... Oh well, all the more for me !
Could someone tell me if bear is worth the effort? I hear the meat taste nasty and I'm not adventureous enough to give it a try - If you can make the meat taste good, I might actively persue em'. Same w/cat. http://www.geocities.com/wanwtf |
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
THINGS ARE GOING GOOD, GETTING THE INSURANCE ALL SORTED OUT AND THEN WAITING FOR SOME PAPERWORK TO COME FOR MY WIFE TO FILL OUT AND THEN WE WILL BE IN BUSINESS. I WOULDN'T MIND COMING HOME TO DO SOME HUNTING. HOPEING I GET PROMOTED AND THEN I WILL BE ABLE TO AFFORD COMING HOME TO DO SOME HUNTING.

RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
WANWTF - In my opinion, bear steak is excellent! But then again, it was probably one of the first solid foods I ate when I was just a little tyke (about 40 years ago). And if you don't like the steak, it makes excellent polish sausage. As a matter of fact, if you plan on attending the June 18 South Sound Longbeards meeting I'll bring some sausage along for you to try.
I haven't eaten cougar since I was about 10 but I remember my family talking about it tasting like pork chops. If I shoot a cougar I plan to save at least the backstraps. Slee, I'm no expert but from what I can tell, a tanned hide is just that. There is no softening of the paws or ears to make them look natural so they tend to be hard and mis-shaped somewhat. When they turn it into a rug they work them over a bit to make them look natural like a live animal. Also, my bear rug has some padding and two layers of felt underneath. It also has a raised skull with an open mouth, eyes, etc. So there is a fair amount of extra work when you have a rug made versus a simple tanning. I'm sure there are some taxidermist types out there that can explain it better than I can. Have no idea how much an elk mount might cost. Robb - Next time you are up for a promotion let us know and we will all send your superiors e-mails with our personal references! That ought to get you back here hunting where you belong in no time. :) |
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Thanks for the info Moose Eyes. I hate to think about it, but I doubt I'll be in a position to argue a $600 taxidermy bill with a wife who could care less if I ever spent another dime on hunting. She doesn't mind me going, but she wishes it was free. I'll definitely be asking for some recipes if I run across one though, rug or no rug. I hear they make an awesome stew too.

RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Maybe I'll make a case for driving down there -- I also need to get one of those shotgun raffle tickets, as well as find out what help we need with JAKES and WITO... So it'll be good to meet ya.

RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
hams and bacon from a bear cant be beat.... just like a pig. my brother got a cat mount back in wi. he has an "I" beam going across his cathedral living room and the cat is mounted to lay on top and look down. pretty spooky the first time you see it.
gator, good luck on getting ahold of that guy..... FYI, if you got the spot on lewis... i got the access. active duty does pay off now and then. im from the government, im here to help. |
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Hey all,
When I kill a bear, I will keep some steaks and the rest will be jerky , sausage , pepperoni. Same with the cat. I wouldn't recommend cooking it in the house. I like it in the smoker or on the grill---outside. Naascar, do they let the non-military in with military personel?? I would like to hunt Chambers Lake this year for waterfowl. We had some good hunting out there. My wife has been hunting with me before and will eat anything except the ducks. But she has eaten duck jerkey and didn't know it. My girls will eat the deer/elk but I can't tell them ahead of time. My 10 year old went duck hunting with me last season and had a ball, except for the gun going off. Gave her some ear plugs and she was happy. It's hard to keep up with everyone one here, so hello to everyone and take it easy. Later BRian |

RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
gator, up here at the trident sub base, all you need is picture id and a military member. or base access (dod, johnson control, etc...)
i cant imagine lewis being any differant then this base. some sections may be off limits, but i imagine the rest should be open. i'll make a couple calls monday. its an army base so i will talk real slow so they understand. any luck with your dairy? i think that guy knows its you and is hiding. im from the government, im here to help. |
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
slee.....lol....All the fielder's except the pitcher and catcher has a donkey. The batter once he hit's the ball...has to get on a donkey and ride it to the bases. The fielder's have to at least be holding their donkey's by the raine's to get or catch a ball.....to be able to throw it....they have to be sitting on their donkey...The batter....if he has 2 strike's on himself....then have to use a shovel as a bat....lol
|
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
No luck on the Dairy nascar, but did hit the elk property today, and it's looking good. We saw two bulls, nice rack on one but not close enough to get a count. and one cow. Also saw three bucks and 5 does.
We had a lot of fun just walking around. Stopped by the taxidermist, not home but still in business. I left him a note to call me. Anyway hope all had a good weekend!! Later BRian |
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
AFTERNOON ALL, WELL LOOKS I WILL BE SIGNING THE NEW TRUCK PAPERS ON FRIDAY, FINGERS CROSSED!!! HOPE EVERYONE HAD A GOOD WEEKEND, DONKEY BASE-BALL, NOW THAT HAS TO BE SOMETHING TO WATCH!!!

RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Yeah, I think I'd have paid money to watch Wayne jumping on a donkeys back and riding it around the bases. Hey Wayne, do you have any pics?
Donkey baseball, I've heard it all now. My next question is what crazy SOB invented this game? Sounds like there was a mining camp somewhere nearby, and I'll bet there was alcohol involved. Hunt hard, live right, and tell your kids you love 'em! RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
For those of you who get my monthly e-mail "Primary Feathers" there was a mistake about the meeting next Tuesday - The directions stated "Exit 74 off I-5" which would put you down towards Olympia... It should have read "74th Street exit off I-5" which would put you at the correct place. Sorry for any confusion.

That donkey baseball sounds more hillarious than the "cow plops" we held at the church. Would love to watch a game (and I don't care to watch baseball). Someone should e-mail fox - they'd probably start up a league!

You guys would've raised more money if you had a camera rolling. America's Funniest Videos would've paid big bucks. I'll bet it was hillarious. If I'd have had to jump on a donkey's back over and over, I'd have needed some treatment by those EMTs.

RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Oh yeah, did anyone make it to the WWC fundraiser this past weekend? I wanted to go, but my wife got back in town on Friday night, my parents left town Saturday morning, and we had to attend a party Saturday night. Busy weekend. Anyway, I was hoping to get a report on the events and the fundraising.
