Frustrating and fun weekend
#1
Well, I was finally able to get to my cabin and landto hunt Friday and Saturday. I still have my injured wife duties, but I was able to sneak out.
We had a full moon during this period, and in general, I don't like to hunt the mornings following. We got out at each day by 11:30-noon and stayed out till dark.
Anyway, this was the first weekend where we saw many deer. I think out of five trips, I only saw 2 deer so far. Its been way to warm around here. My friend (a compound guy), got a 4 point a week ago.
On Friday, I saw deer all day long, I think I saw 10 deer in total and my friend saw 8. I had fawns under my stand a few time, but I won't shoot them. I gave a bleat around 3:00 in the afternoon, and 20 minutes later had movment to the right. I saw antlers coming my way and I got ready. Unfortunately, this guy walk right up my lane diretly facing me. He quartered to me hard and went behind me at about 7 yards (no shot, too thick, can't get the bow behind the tree anyway). He thencame out on in the middle of my lane to the left and walk straight/quartered hardaway from me. [:@]Of course I got some razing from my firend.
Saturday, I saw a total of eight deer. Again, I had fawns right under me. I also had a doe which I believe was bigger then the one I got last year (140 pound dressed) at 25 yards quartering hard away from me. She was only in that spot for a second though. At about 4pm, I had another big doe feeding behind an apple tree at 22 yards. She had no clue I was there. I watched her for about 20 minutes in a ready position. She finally presented herself standing broadside with the front of her body exposed, her head was down. I let one fly, only to have to sail right over her back [:@], left/right was perfect. My friend saw 8 deer that day, plus a bonus black bear which winded him and took off like he**.
It was fun though and would do it over and over again. I still can't figure out what went wrong with the shot other then it had to be me. Yesterday, I continuously made the shot, without a single arrow going over the 3-d deers back. I guess it just wasn't meant to be on Friday or Saturday.
My next hunt will be in Wisconsin starting Sunday.
