I'd go with a Savage 110 or 111 bolt in a .223 or .243. You could go bigger, but you don't need to, but at any rate the Savage is a good buy, plus they come with a scope already mounted. It may be a cheapo, but it's a scope.

I just picked up a Remington 700 ADL in .243 at wallmart for $297. I put a $150 scope on it and it shoots great. You can pick up a $30 scope which would keep you close to your budget.
243 can do everything a 223 can and more. I plan to use it on deer this fall. Give my .30-06 a year off.

Savage rifles are awesome! One can't beat the price and quality of that gun. Sure, it's not a Remington BDL, or a Sako, or a Lazzeroni etc... but for the performance/price combo, it can't be beat. PERIOD.

savage 110 in a 22-250 i got my for about $400 it came whit a 3+9 on it side in at 100yd and your bee on the money at 200yd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
