Depends what for? For deer, I like sierra 300gr ok, but prefer 300gr nosler partition. I have been shooting 46gr of IMR4198 kicking at 2000fps. But my accuracy is like 2.5MOA. So I got some IMR3031 and going to give it a try.

I like hornaday 350grsp 54grain varget they are around 1900 fps. I can get alittle more from my buffalo classic but it has a 32 in barrel. That is notbook top end.

Best for what purpose? You can easily load bullets of various constructions and weights ranging from a 135-grain round lead ballall the way up to over 500 grains in a .45/70, loads suitable for shooting everything from jackrabbits and porcupines up to Cape Buffalo.

If you give us a more narrow hint as to your intended uses, maybe it would be possible to be of more help here.

If you're talking about shooting boar or hogs, I'd stick to a 400-grain jacketed flatnose bullet and use 53 grains of IMR 3031 with it. IMO, the lighter bullets are intended for deer, except for perhaps the Speer 350-grainer and the Nosler Partition design.

Don't forget the 250 and 300 Barnes TSX.

my fave load is 51 gr of H4198 with Hornady 300 gr HP. Warning this is a max. load. But shoots well in MY rifle.

Now, that's a good load. The exact same amount of IMR 3031 gives almost identical performance.

In my Ruger No. 1, 300 grain bullets don't shoot too well, but 350 and 400-grain ones do.
