The Stratton area is flat land, farmed, tree's and brush. It is quite aways away from Lake Of The Woods. Probably 25-30 miles away. No lakes around Stratton. Great deer hunting area for sure. Usually alot of non-resident and resident hunters around at that time but who ever you are hunting with must have land set up for a hunt. Probably leased from farmers.
We hunt the Lake Of The Wood's with rifleand the Aulneau Peninsula. The Aulneau is16 miles wide and 30 miles long and is muzzle loader & bowonly. Out of Nestor Falls/Souix Narrows.
Opportunies for some trophy buck for sure.

I live about 20 miles frm Barwick. There are alot of deer in the Barwick/Stratton area, thatis for sure. I would make sure that the outfitter has private land leased. There is alot of resident hunters from Eastern Onatrio that hunt in the area and they all get their extra dow tags and shoot anything that moves. The NR pressure isn't ridiculous like up by Kenora as there is guide requirement forWMU 10 which you will be hunting. Some of the best areas to hunt if you are going to use an outfitter are WMU 9B, 10, 11A, & partof 7B. By hunting in these, there isn't near as much pressure as the unguided area. As long as you are huting private land inWMU 10, you should have an excellent hunt. Who are you hunting with? Goodluck.

Good luck on the hunt. I hunt about 10 miles north of Stratton. Some big bucks in the area. You must be hunting on private land because there is very little crown land in that area.

There are many hunters that take advantage of the unguided option in certain wild life mangement units but the better part of these hunters will hunt predictable logging roads and most do not venture into the unlogged, uninhabitted lakes and boreal forest fo the Lake OF The Wood's/Aulneau peninsula.
On the flip side, compulsuary guided portions of NW Ontario will be preditably leased/claimed by individual outfitters. There are many individual outfitters in these "guided zones" licensed or not. I feelthe hunt in these area's differ in certain aspects ofour White-tailhunt.

for those willing to do the unguided hunts and get a great deer you must do your homework and spend some time scouting, go up several times throughout the year to find a location away from the beaten path. Problem with that is the time it takes to do such a thing, but it can be rewarding, i know several groups that go up and they always have a good hunt.
If you can;t dedicate the time towards scouting, then go the guide route, several different guiding services in here offering their expertise and loads more willing to take you out hunting

Here is a summary of the snow level conditions that will have an effect on the deer herd in the Lake Of The Wood's / Rainy / Kenoraarea this pasty winter.

WINTER WEATHER & THE DEER HERD
We have had a more than average amount of snow fall this year. The larger amounts of snow that has fallen were in the month of Febuary and average amounts were seen earlier in the winter. From experience I expect this snow to melt fast with the on-coming warmer temps and the fact that the heavier snow falls occurred late in the winter months puts less stress time on our white-tail herd. There is not alot of winter left and the herd willbe strong.
Have been seeing good numbers of deer foraging. Healthy looking deer for sure.
A large amount of snow fall is what can effect the deer herd. Wolves with their broad paws can run the deep snow quite well and the deeper snow can also make it hard for the deer to get at their food.
The MNRhave issued a local press release encouraging local people not to feed the deer and that the herd is quite healthy. There will not be a major negative effect from the winter months on thewhite-tail herdthis year.
