I don't feel that my .300 RUM kicks very hard, I have shot some 200 grainers and they have kicked the hardest but its still not much. I also a a Limb Saver recoil pad and I think that helps. I shot my friends .338 RUM and it did kick but again it wasn't bad at all. Its not like you shoot 60 times or more at the bench. The most I have shot my .300 RUM at the bench is 40 times. And I average about 30 per sitting. The only time I have had my arm and shoulder hurt from recoil is goose hunting when its good and I was shooting a lightweight Benelli Nova, 12 Gauge with heavy goose loads 3.5". Its something about being flat on your back and trying to sit up while the gun pounds away at you shoulder. I think I went through almost 3 boxes, my shooting sucked but I did have my limit of geese for the day. Oh how I missed my Browning Gold 10 that day, it kicks very light.

Well I can't speak for anyone but me but I can tell you why I would not buy one any of the UM's. You may feel that they don't kick much but when you compare them with other rifles that will do the same job, then recoil is certainly an issue. In my mind for any game in North America the 300 Win mag is easliy up to the task. If you like a heavier bullet then I could see, and have owned a couple 338 Win Mags. Anything more than that TO ME is a waste of power and more recoil than I have any desire to put up with. I seem to be one of the few who thinks you can have enough power and any more is just not worth having. To me the 30-06 is plenty of gun for NA. I would use my 45-70 in the case of looking for the big bears but feel plenty safe carrring my 7600 30-06 in bear country. I have killed elk with the 260 and X bullets so I know that I have plenty of gun packing the 30-06 or even YES the dreaded 270 and 280. The Rambo in me is long gone as are my 338 and 416 rifles. Enough is enough and the UL's to me are much to much. Don't need them. Like I said thats my reason for not buying one. If someone else likes them or thinks they need them then its good for the firearms industry and thats fine by me.

Having owned several 300 UM and other mags 300's,7mm's.338's and a few 375 H&H's and 2 416's.I like the 300 and the 338 UM and they realy don't bash you like some pepole say,and with a quality recoil pad, down right easy to shoot.I'v put 40 rounds in one sitting through a 300 UM one of the first ones that came out and it did hurt,it was alot more than my 06 and my .300 Win.I learned that day when in moderatoin it was most enjoyable.
I shot a new .338 UM last fall and was truly amazed at limbsaver recoil pads as this gun was a powder puff to shoot.I almost ran out and bought a .338 UM but for already having 2 .338 Win Mags it did not seem logical, instead this year I'm buying a Remington SPS 300 UM.
as for this panty thing each to his own.

This topic has gone from a legitimate question to muzzlebreaks and panties. Personally I'll wear the panties before i use a muzzlebreak. I simply cannot take the noise from a rifle with a break. i'll take the shoulder hit anyday. With regards to the Ultra mags.....my only question is why? Do we really need an "ultra" 7mm mag? or an "ultra" 300 wm? I'll have to fall back to the fenceriding position of "to each his own." However, if I have to wear panties, they better not be thongs! OUCH!

Wow, takes a heck of a man to admit that swamp.

question of why? Same reason a guy would pick a 30-06 for deer. Sure its way overkill, and a bow could do just as well if you have the patience to wait for that 20 yard shot. But for the fun of it, lets shoot it wiht a gun.

I personaly like recoil, Maybe its the bodybuilder in me but I like the feel of it. I bought a savage .300 win mag 116 fss it weighed about 6.5 lbs none of my hunting buddies would shoot it . So I gave them some panties to wear!!! But it did have some wicked recoil for that calibur.

mine you wont even hear when shooting at an animal,

And after shooting a dozen or so animals without using hearing protection, you won't hear much of anything.

What, that i don't want a thong or that i hate muzzle breaks. My foray into recoil is a 7.82 Warbird Lazzeroni/sako TRG_S. It has no muzzle break and it thumps pretty good, but i like it. I guess i could shoot deer with it, but i like my venison in steaks, not pulverized. And i still don't like thongs![:@]

The reason I think the .338 RUM is nor very popular is because it's hidden between the .338 Win. Mag., and the .340 Wby. Mag.

I really like the .338 calibers. One can own a .338-06 pushing a 250 gr. 2,600 f/s 3,752 ft/lb, up to a .338 Excaliber pushing a 250 gr. 3,250 f/s 5,862 ft/lb. Good luck.

The .338ultra is not between the two as it produces just as much velocity as the 340wby.
