I've had the Marlin Guide 1895 for a few years. Surprised me how little recoil it had. The porting works! The trigger is relatively heavy for a sporter, but I did not anticipate anything over 100 yards. It can be replaced if you like. I think some of the forum members have used it on deer & elk. 'hope they report in on it.

I have always wanted a big lever action gun. Last spring I bought a marlin 1985, not the short guide gun, but the original. And man do I love it.
Something just feels good about racking a lever action on a gun that you could almost fit your pinky finger down the barrel of. It definately has a thump when you shoot it, but if you are used to shooting 3006, then it won't be to big of a deal. If you had only shot .22's, then yeah it would kick more than you might expect.

It is a great round to hunt with or to have fun at the range. If you get one start out with remington 405 grain rounds they are a pretty weak round then as you get in to it alittle m ore try pmc ,buffalo bore or garrett rounds. (if you dont reload) I have a Buffalo Classic with a 32in barrel it is very accurate out to 150 yards with open sights.

The Marlin is easy to scope. I have an NEF single shot that shoots great and comes with the scope mount. About 200.00 new at Walmart. They will order one for you. However make them call thier supplier and make sure they are in stock. Otherwise it can take a long time.

30-06lover, the Marlin lever rifles and the Ruger #1 single shots can both have scopes mounted. I hear there are other single shots out there, but I have not seen them. The Marlin lever stocks pretty much come with enough drop that they are partial to open sight use. The Ruger #1 takes you higher, up to a scope level, for natural point.
Only a big deal if you are up against something that wants to stand on you and eat your horse.

I have a marlin 1895 ss, 22" barrel, and use the Winchester 300 gr Super X JHP in it. Recoil is very manageable, and it packs one hell of a punch on the business end. I consider this the perfect black bear cartridge. I shot a deer at about 120 yds last year with mine. I made bad shot, just clipping the bottom of the heart. The deer ran about 70 yds, however a blind man could have followed the blood trail.
If you do your job and make a good hit, deer usually just fall over.

i have the matlin 45.70 . i has a pistol break instead of a muzzle break put on it. i changed out the strigger and lever also.i also put the xo sights on it.you can shoot the heavier loads but they are really not necessary. i shoot a 305gr and it has killed everything it has hit.
