I have a marlin 1895 ss, 22" barrel, and use the Winchester 300 gr Super X JHP in it. Recoil is very manageable, and it packs one hell of a punch on the business end. I consider this the perfect black bear cartridge. I shot a deer at about 120 yds last year with mine. I made bad shot, just clipping the bottom of the heart. The deer ran about 70 yds, however a blind man could have followed the blood trail.

If you do your job and make a good hit, deer usually just fall over.
