.22 caliber single shots.
Good morning everybody,Do any of you have ,collect, shoot,or just buy old .22 single shot or repeater bolt action rifles? I try to get every single shot bolt I can find.I don't know why .Yesterday I bought a Remington model #514 I have not really shot it ( just once to make sure it worked).I see them on gunsamerica anywhere from $175 -$200 I was thinking that that is pretty expensive. Is there anything special about this model? I have a Remington Model 540 X ( finally) My buds and I go to the river and shoot the .22 rifles almost every day .We have a little game that is like progressive poker.Set up cans at about 50 yds. ante up a buck every body shoots you must knock the can DOWN If nobody knocks down the can you ante up again. If I shoot first and knock down the can everybody else gets their shot .If they don't knock down the can then I get the pot.The trick is you have to "rim" the can or blow dirt up on it. A center mass shot wont even move the can.BTW I only gave $40 for the 514 does anybody know much about this gun? I also have targetmasters,Anschutz,Revelation,Speedmasters, and all kinds of others.Thanks. (If you ever come to Danville come on out and play.We have a ball).........Swampdog

The only .22 rifle I have right now, and have had it for 25 years, is a Remington 581 bolt action. In its day it was an economy model but its a really good shooter. I must have put 100,000 rounds through it and have never missed a squirrel yet.

My grandpa hasan old 514 that I've used. For an Excellent condition model, I'd say $150-$175 is fair. They're a bit rare now, so I don't get to see a lot of them for sale to compare prices.
For plinking and on squirrels out to 50 yards, itgets the job done just fine.
If you need a breakdown schematic, let me know.

I like the single shots. Like many, I grew up shooting single shot rifles and shot guns. Right niow I have several Stevens Little Favorites. They are fun and cheap to shoot. Sort of takes me back a ways.

I recently bought a Remington 510 for $40 at an auction. I refinished the stock including adding a walnut rootwood foreend tip and replaced the plastic (broken) but pad with a 1/4" thk recoil pad and it looks gorgeous.
It also got a high polish hot blue job. Thank goodness I can do all this myself or that gun would be way too expensive now.
