270 Winchester Short Mag
I'm a long-time hunter, but new to this forum. Im primarily a Bow & Black Powder hunter. This year I started hearing comments about the Win 270WSM and the 300 WSM.
The only other big game rifle I own and have ever used in a 30-06 semi-auto Mod 742. I have never had a problem, misfire or jam. However, this year I put in a request for a birthday present, the 270 WSM or the 300 WSM. I'm sure there are those of you who have experienced both of these rifles, their capabilities and negatives if any.
I would appreceiate any and all feed back anyone might want to afford me.

I love the 270wsm, great round. I have no experience with the 300 wsm. The 270wsm is a great deer round (as is its older brother). Federal is manufacturing more loads for both the 270,7mm, and 300 wsm's this year. Mines chambered in a model 70 featherweight and its a pleasure to shoot, recoil isnt a problem. You could also do a search on this forumn for the 270 or the 300wsm and you will see several recent conversatoins listed.

If you have a good working and functioning .30-06 you'll not appreciably gain in your versatility with a .270 in any form...you might be better off with something bigger (like a .338 mag) or something smaller (like a .243Win) A .270 WSM is somewhat redundant to the .30-06.

Personally I see absolutly no drawback to them at all. IMO, there are far more advantages to them than there are disadvantages. More and more rifles are being chambered for them, More and more factory ammo is being loaded for them. They are becoming more and more popular so they won't be going anywhere as far as I can see.
I am just about finished building my own 300 WSM for myself. In about a week I'll be able to take it to the range. I can't wait!!!!!

I am going to have to disagree that the 270 WSM is redundant in reguards to the 30-06. The 270 WSM is designed around a bullet in the 130-150gr range, while the 30-06 is generally thought of as more of a 180 grain round. At every comparable weight, the 270 WSM shoots significantly flatter. I belive that the 270 WSM gives you more versitility than the 30-06 if you are talking about deer sized animals. If larger critters such as elk are to be considered, then I would skip the 30-06 alltogether and opt for something bigger.
