Default 7mm Rem Mag vs. 30-06

Well guys, I am about to buy a new rifle, and I think I have narrowed it down to these two calibers. I have shot an 06, but never a 7mm Rem mag. Do they perform pretty much the same? What are the pros and cons of both? I know I could look some up, and I have, but I want to hear from guys who own them. Thanks fellas!

The 7mmremmag has a flatter trajectory and a little more energy.Other than that they perform very similarly.

About 10 years or so ago the choice would have been easy for me. I absolutely hated the 7mm Rem Mag and thought the 30-06 was the end all of cartridges. However they actually have 7mm bullets now that hold up to the velocities of the 7mm Rem Mag and perform very well on game. Both are great cartridges. Both will do the job on almost anything in North America. Flip a coin and you win either way. If you already have a 308 Win or a 270Win I would get the 7mm Rem Mag.

I have used the 7mm Rem. Mag., the 7X57mm, the .30/' 06, and .270 Win. for about 40 years for hunting deer, black bear, and elk! There' s not enough difference between any of these four to recommend one over the other by any discernable margin! If I were to go after BIG, DANGEROUS bears, I' d use a .338 Win.. a .340 Weatherby, or something in the .375 H&H class!!

I agree with the guys on this one. There is not much of a difference between the 7mm Rem Mag and the .30-06, when used on game, to tell the difference. In certain " specific cases" either have an advantage or two over the other! And I most certainly agree with eldeguello...if you have either a .270 Winchester or the .308 Winchester and you really want to increase your utility on " big game" go with a good medium bore. Any of the three eldeguello mentioned would make a great addition. The .338 Win Mag is more popular than the .340 Weatherby, much less expensive, far easier to find ammo, comes in a wider selection of rifles, and is easier on the shoulder. But of course the .340 Weatherby has both more velocity and more energy. Either of them shoot a little flatter than the .375 H&H. What the .375 H&H does better than either of the other is throw a bullet of larger diameter and makes a better " stopper" with dangerous game. It is a world standard in all parts of the world where either large and/or dangerous game can be found. All three cartridges are truly great " medium bores" .

I have to remind you that the ammo for the .30-06 costs around $10 a pack and the 7MM Rem. Mag. goes for around $18 a pack. If money is an issue and you shoot a lot this might be something to think about. I have both a .30-06 and the 7MM Mag. They both do the job very well.

Good luck,

Depends on how much you shoot and the type of gun. I have both and 06 is much easier on my shoulder than 7mm. My 06 is a rebuilt surplus rifle with a bolt action that, after 30 years, still drives tacks. My 7mm is a Ruger 1B, that I use as a backup cause it kicks like a mule, though I have killed deer with it. Then there is the cost of the shells. 06 Remingtons can be had at Wallyworld for $10 - 11, while 7mm can be had for $18 - 23.

Where are these 7 rem mag prices coming from....I was at Basspro shop yesterdayand they were a buck more a box than a 06 for Remington Corelockts... I would rather have the 7 mag for 2 reasons.

1. It shoots substantially flatter ...same recoil more muzzle blast
2. It will out penetrate an 06 because of its superior sectional density..in fact after shooting game with a 7 rem mag..300 win mag and 300 wthby mag I see no advantage of the 300 mags just increased recoil... Shooting at deer they simply crumple with the 7 mag or even a 270 for that matter but always run off dead after being hit by the 300. Same applies to Elk....
