Default will anyone give me the double the new price for a used gun

A friend came over and told my dad he had a hi point 45 for sale. not my gun of choice, but hey it is a gun and would make a good gun to use for say fishing or hunting where if it gets dropped and sctrached I could care less.

I called the guy told him I was home and if he wanted to bring it by I would make him a offer, given their like 150 to 200 new, it was used and my dad said rusty, I figured 75 maybe 100 bucks, worst case something I can hide shoudl someone come collectly guns for his lordship obama.

He came over and the rust was not rust but looked like someone had slightly over sprayed the front 2 inchs with a brownish paint and tried to remove it, it was around the sights and cracks and on the out side of the barrel, I racked the slide and it rubbed off the barrel so not rust. I said most I could see doing is 75 to 100, he dam near slapped me and all but ripped it out of my hands
He said ohh I know what it is worth the guy I got it from showed me the price in a book, I said well how much did you give for it.... He said 300 I said their like 175, they sell them up the street all day long for that. He said ohh no not this one. I did not have the heart to tell the old man he got (You certainly did! JW!).

This is the third person with a cheapo gun trying to get top dollar or higher then new for one.

He told me ohh I want to know my gun is going to knock them down. I said I want to know mine will fire and showed him my new glock 17, then he gave me the the 45 puts them down, I said yeap my glock 45 is in the house.

I hear it every day. Just had a customer come in to the store with a Ruger SR9 he wanted to sell that had obviously been used and carried and dropped on the ground at least once.

I offered him $225 for the gun. He snatched it out of my hands and told me he knew what they were worth and there was no way he would take so little. I asked him how much he wanted for it and he told me $350. I just had to chuckle a little when I told him that he would never get that at a gun shop considering what a dealer buys them for new. He stormed out of the store and didn't even give me the chance to explain my offer.

Some people you just can't help.

The same thing happens with Browning A5's. They aren't worth nearly what people think they are worth. You'd think they were made of gold or something.

You ought to be appraised what some folks think a walnut tree is worth!!!!......and even one that is a foot is diameter.....and they can become offended when they are not offered thousands when they are merely firewood!

Yeap when we headed to florida in dec I stopped by the local pawn shop as we were about 100 bucks short of the c cash we needed to get down there. I got tired of pawn fees and was just going to let my ruger 10/22 go, he offered me 85 bucks, way lower then I would have even thought of letting it go, but since their 200 new, and my guess 150 or so max to a dealer I just opted to pawn it and told him nicely it was just not enough, when I cam back and bought my glock off of them, he cut me a deal and knocked 40 bucks off of it, even though the policy is no deals on new guns, as their already lower then everyone else.

we own a construction business here in indiana, we sell, repair, homes, and even move mobiles and modulers, we had a custmer ask us to look at 3 he wanted to buy and move to 2 lots he had, they where so bad being the big guy I would not walk into 2, my dad told him you buy them for 3000 and I move the one and take the other 2 and 5k for doing the work. The guy looked at my dad and said ant it 1500 to move and set one trailer, my dad said yes but I have to take the other two. All three were tear downs, the issue with that is even tearing one down you get 350-500 from the scrap, be it hand labor, back hoes, or what we have yet to find a way to tear one down for anything close to the scrap value.

Had a guy offer to sell me one for 1000, he said it is in good shape and I need it moved, I told him 1000k and I will move it, he said well I wanted you to buy it from me, I said honestly it is to old, to small, and just to dam ugly, NO ONE WANTS 30-40 foot 10 wide trailers.

I see this all the time. I'm a member of a local gun classifieds forum for our state only. I hardly ever see a deal on there, and often times people want more than they cost new. It's annoying, but it happens quite often so is just something you have to deal with I guess.

For example, there was a guy a while back with a Savage Model 10 with a Simmons scope. Just like they sell at Walmart. He wanted $400 for his used one yet they sell it for $387 at Walmart. He tried to tell me his was worth more because it didn't come from Walmart and the ones from Walmart must have cheap plastic internals, even though his was the same model.

Another guy is wanting to sell a Ruger LCP I'd like to have with a Crimson Trace laser and a box of ammo. He wants $450 for a used one. A local gun shop sells these brand new for $399.

About 90% of the guns for sale ads I see are like this. The other 9% are priced $25-50 cheaper than new, and the other 1% are decent deals. I've run across a couple of deals in my life, but I've not seen all that many recently on guns, and they seemed to be in the minority.

The crazy part is while a lot of that stuff doesn't sell, some of it actually does. Seems like a lot of guys would rather trade their gun in for 1/3 of what they cost new instead of selling it for 60-70% of the new price.

A buddy of mine owns a gun store in PA and I buy from him at his cost. I want to say 2 years ago I paid about $325 for a new Springfield Armory USGI 1911. I think thats about the least expensive 1911 I ever purchased. I cannot imagine buying a new 1911 for $200. How could a manufacturer make a profit, even if they were building them in South America?
