Default The age old debate...270 or .30-06?

I realize this topic has been discussed into the ground over many, many years, but I'm just looking for some feedback from the veteran hunters out there as to which one they prefer.
I hunt deer and hogs. Where I'm at in east Texas, the deer aren't huge but the hogs in the 400-500 lb. range are taken from time to time.
I know both calibers will do the job rather well, I just like hearing opinions on which caliber you folks like better based on personal experience.
I'll probably never be lucky enough to hunt elk, moose, or bear. I wont be shooting 500 yards at south Texas whitetail either. The majority of the deer I've taken have been 50-175 yard shots.
O.K.....270 VS. .30-06......Let the games begin!!!!!!!

No games, you already know the answer. 270 is great for deer, maybe the best ever. It's not the best for hogs, but in some peoples opinion, with good shot placement, it will be fine. In other peoples opinion it will be to light for largehogs. If you are going to hunt hogs with a 270 you better be a great shot or in a tree. I personally prefer magnums, because I'm such a lousy tracker, due to being color blind.

Thanks for the response! Yeah, if deer were the only dish on the menu, I would have already decided on the .270
I just don't really know if I would see much difference in a 150gr. Partition from the .270 or a 180gr. Partition from the .30-06 should a BIG hog wander in front of me.

Keep the opinions coming!

I might be wrong, but I think you're looking for an argument, not a rifle. I can tell from your post and response that youalready know what you're talking about. If you know, that much you alreadyknow your own answer.

Arguing on the internet is like being in the special olympics, even if you win you're still retarded!!!

I don't claim to be very knowledgable at all about this debate but whenever I bought my first center fire work-horse rifle I went with a .270 over the 30-06 even though the same model rifle was the same price simply because I had heard that it is supposedly "flatter" due to a lighter bullet plusprobably 99.9% of the game it'll be pointed at will be whitetail deer in Mississippi. I plan to purchase a 30-06 someday (if not something bigger actually)and head west to try my luck on a big horn but whether or not it'll totally replace my .270 is still up in the air. For now I'm extremely happy with my choice, though I have yet to harvest anything other than paper and coffee cans with it.

There is no way on gods green earth that the 270 would be less than sufficient for any size hogs. Or anything else in NA with the possible exception of grizzly and Polar bears and they too have been taken with the 270. You would be well armed with either the 270 or 30-06. No critter would ever know the difference.

It's nice to have a collection but might as well just make it a 30-06. The 30-06 may not be "as flat" but it's way more versatile. I also own a 7mm Rem Mag. I won't go below the 7mm's and stick with them and the .30's. Anything small would just be for plinking and having fun in my fruitful opinion. Need a short action with no recoil? Easy, get a 7mm-08 or a .308.

You get the picture.

Simple answer. Shorts shots(less than 200 yards). 30-06 with 200 grain Sierra Game King Bullets. I am not knocking the more expensive bullets, I have just never seen a difference, so why buy 100 Nosler's(or other high priced bullets)for the price of 200 Sierra's. Sorry 270 guys, but the 270 just can not match this load. Tom.

This is a paper argument. Measuring miuntia from a chonograph or a paper target is one thing.... but actual field experience and results are another. I'm sure we'll get more than a few from both sides extolling their caliber's virtues.
The real news is,,,,.... you can miss just as bad with a 270 as with a 30/06

Placement is what counts......bullet diameter and weight mean little to an animal with it's lungs torn open.
Hunting with a 270 with a 150gr bullet is done all around the world for lotsa game....and the 30/06 is probably just ahead in the numbers for the same bullet weight, although I prefer the 180....but one is not appreciably better except in the eyes of those that hold the guns.
