tried out my sons new BAR 30-06 with a brake at the target range back before deer season here in Maine. After hearing all the reports about how noisy they were, yup, you bet we wore the ear protection. After he had gotten it pretty well dialed in, he asked me if I'd like to take a few pops. So down I sat at the bench, got comfy with the new firearm, and touched off the first shot. Naturally in my entheusiasm, I forgot to put my plugs in.
The reports of how noisy these things are were pretty close to the truth. Ringing ears for about a minute but then after that, not too bad of any aftereffects, other than feeling like a dumbass.
The break pretty much reduced the recoil to 30-30'ish proportions.

I only like muzzle breaks for semi-automatic rifles. I only need one to help reaquire my target when I'm doing the rapid fire. It helps reduce muzzle climb in the SKS, Mini 30/14, and such. Those guns are not so loud to begin with!

I went to the range toenjoy in my .308 last week and after about 30 minutes three guys set up next to me. One of them pulled out a browining that had a muzzle break on it. I sat there and just waited until they got done. I knew it would take away my concentration just knowing that a pop was about to go off beside me. Each blast was like a punch in the gut. I of course had muffs on but still. I don't understand why people would put that on their rifle.
