How many of you shoot until it drops?

Yourbest chance of killing a deer is with the first shot.
Thinking about a second shows a lack of confidence in the first.
Why would somebody wait for a clear broadside shot, take careful aim squeeze off the shot, and then think that any shots after that are going to be anywhere near as good when the deer is busting through the woods after the first?
Here is my deer killing procedure for hunting whitetailsin the woods.
1.Wait for good shot.
2.Take it.
3.Spot exactly where deer was standing when shot was taken.
4.Remember what direction deer went, and how deer ran after shot.
5.Listen in the direction he ran.
6.Wait 15 minutes.
7.Go find blood.
8.Find deer at the end of short blood trail.
If the hunter follows these steps, he is in complete control of the situation.

Those guys were pure Jack Asses. Just like the guy that says, "what will a second shot do that the first didn't do".

What do you think the second bullet is going to do that the first one didn't? Other than mess up more meat. Dead is dead. If your first shot was a lethal shot then the deer will die, putting more bullets in it probably won't speed this up any.

If others want to that's fine, I'm just not going to do it. Three bullets into the lungs will not kill a deer any faster than one will. Or worse yet one into the lungs, another in the guts and another in the rump. I can normally see where I hit the deer when I make the shot with a gun. With a bow I can actually watch the arrow go thru the deer.
If you don't want to shoot them in the vitals and they don't drop then I guess that is on you and no one else. Don't sit there and argue ethics when you don't want to shoot a deer in the vitals because you want to take that off chance it will drop on the spot. And even if it does drop on the spot and can't move because it has two broken shoulders it still isn't going to die in most cases until it bleeds out.

OkLarry WeishunI mean Paul. We get your point. If you can live with yourself and the fact that you can shoot a deer and stand there and watch it suffer for 1, 2,or5 minutes when you could put another shot in it thats fine. Maybe thats never happened to you and I hope it never does. All that is being said is if you shoot a deer, even if the shot was perfectly placed, and the deer gives you another shot to put it out of its misery then some of us take it. It has nothing to do with shot placement orOne shot one kill... It has everything to do with the "Right" thing to do. Personally and like I mentioned earlier most of the deer I shoot run after the shot (I like a double lung or heart shot vs. a shoulder shot) so I don't always get that second one. But if they give it to me I take it. I'm a big bow hunter as well and I hope to get my 75th bow harvest this year. I know all about shot placement and how important it is. Even with my bow I will shoot them twice if they give it to me. I've shot several deer over the years that only went a couple of yards with a perfectly placed arrow. I could see the blood pumping out of them perfectly behind the shoulder...yet I did the "RIGHT" thing and put another one in them b/c I could and it would make them go out quicker.
Btw I like a double lung or heart shot due to the fact if you hit a deer with a .270 like caliber in that shoulderbone just right it could riquochet or not get enough penetration, which happened to me, and in turn you could have a lengthy blood trail. All you head shot guys should be ashamed for admitting that. A guy in the club across the road bragged about his shooting skills till one day my dad finished off a doe that came by his stand thatthe guy across the roadhad blown the lower jaw off of trying to head shot it @ 50yds. A 2" miss on a head shot means a wounded deer. A 2" miss behind the shoulder means a dead deer guaranteed anyway you look at it.

I agree 250...lots of people here hunting in a perfect world. I stalk them in pretty thick areas and to sum it up pretty clearly just remember... SH*T HAPPENS!! Most of my shots are pretty close and I have seen bullets do some weird stuff at close ranges therefore I dont take any chances. I learned to keep shooting the hard way. Now for those of you who are perfect and have never missed or made a bad hit or who always have perfectly clear shots then I guess shooting twice would be beneath any of you...my hat is off to you

And head shots? Years ago we started a state monitored deer population program on our farm. We were slaughtering massive amounts of doe's. My brother and I would rideour roads and shoot adozen in a day. We got pretty cocky and started head shooting. Oneday I head shotone and itran. I found lots of hair on the ground where I shot it. 2 weeks later I shot the same deer and killed it. Her jaw was hanging, upper mouth dry and cracked, and she had lost about 40% of her weight. What asses we were. I was tearing up as I loaded her in the truck.

Before you start attacking me and comparing me to others (by the way I don't take being compared to Larry a big put down?, although I don't believe I am any were near that good of a hunter) please actually READ my posts, not just the parts you want to.
And don't go putting words in my mouth or making assumptions about me that you have no knowledge of considering you don't even know who I am.
After the last few posts I look for this thread to be locked anyway.
And can I handle a deer suffereing for 1,2,3 or 5 minutes, sure I can considering that is about how long it takes for one to die, irregardless of how many holes you put in it. I don't care if you instantaniously emptied the deer of blood it would still take the same amount of time for it to lose consiousness. When shot in the vitals deer die in the same manor, lack of oxygen to the brain. Either from bleeding out, choking or loss of flow if the heart stops. In some cases they get a shock to the central nervous system that takes them down, but they are still not dead yet.
It doesn't sound pretty, but it is the truth, and I don't kid myself about it. If you want to that's fine. Don't lecture me on ethics. We kill animals that is the bottom line. If you feel the need to make yourself feel better about it or justify it to yourself and others than that is your problem. I have learned to except it and have no regrets.

Come 'on folks,
Whitetail deer are not that hard to kill. Learning how to get the shot is what is hard.
I do suspect though that those who are consistantly shooting more than once are hunting in more open country and can actually see the deer for a distance after they shoot. I hunt in some pretty thick woods. I will tell you this; One bullet in the vitals will do it everytime.
