I have a 7 mag and love it, not much on ruger rifles though. I hate the 3 position safety and not much on the look of their rifles either. As far as the Howa i have heard good things about their actions, some say they are highly overlooked. The ruger is a good deal and the 7 mag is amazing. If money is a concern go with the ruger. I have seen alot of deer knocked off their feet with .270's at long range too. So really i couldnt decide either.

In my opinion, Howas are one of the best deals on the market right now. Same could be said for the Wal-Mart Weatherby Vanguard. That would be my choice over a Ruger (and I own one) anyday.

though i would prefer the .270 over the 7mm, the price differnce is enough for me to change my mind. so i ould ask the co-worker to let me shoot the gun first and see how it feels and then if it works out buy the gun. either choice wont be bad

Id go with the ruger 7mag is a better all around caliber shoots flat hits hard and ammo isnt that much higher also if you dont like the scope sell it and buy one of the scopes you mentioned and youll still come in under budget. BTW I have a bushnell I bought 24yrs ago when I bought my ruger 77 7mag and it still prints 1"groups.

Both options sound like good deals...but if I were you, I would buy the used 7mm mag. You can definitely handle the recoil if you shoot 3.5 inch 12 gauge loads...just make sure you get a scope with enough eye relief. Ultimately it is up to you, and I doubt you will be disappointed either way, but just imagine the other cool stuff you could buy with the money you save. Good luck, and let us know what you decide on.
