I am not a fan of either, but they are both great. The type and weight of the guns and loads will make a difference in recoil. So a light weight .270 may have more felt recoil than a heavy '06. With the exception of shooting heavier bullets better, the '06 doesn't have enough "real world" advantage over the 7MM-08, .270, .280, or the .308 Win. to fret over! Pick one!

The 150 grain bullet in the 270 would not be the same as the 30-06. That is because the 150 grain in the 270 has a higher sectional density than the same weoght bullet in a larger diameter.

if you are hunting whitetails, do yourself a favor and look at a 7mm-08.

If you're really worried about 3" or soof drop difference at 400yds then these two shouldn't have been mentioned as choices in the first place, as magnums would've been the only way to go(if you shoot farther you'd better be good enough at shooting sothe drop doesn't matter). Trajectory being knocked off the list as something to worry about, the 30-06 can be shot very cheaply, it being an ex-mil. cartridge, and has a lot more bullet choices at 30 caliber than 27 caliber. Recoil? If you're worried about it go shoot a 243, or put on an inexpensive limbsaver to make it feel like one. The 30-06 has a better rep. for accuracy than the 270; I've never heard of a competition rifle in 270. So you've got my opinion, 30-06.

Now and then I hear stories about the 270 being less accurate than the 30-06. In real life though I have owned several 25-06, 270, 280, 30-06 and 35 Whelen. All use the 30-06 casing and for the life of me, I have never seen any difference in accuracy between any of them. You get the same accuracy differences as you might expect between different rifles but not calibers in my expierence. The lack of competion rifles in 270 is probably due to the lack of different bullet weoghts and match grade bullets. This is certainly not to take anything away from them 30-06 but having used them both, I prefer the 270 for deer hunting. The 270 shoots flat enough to take deer out as far as anyone has any business shooting at game animals. IMO.

Hello :James B
The 270 is a American favorite, mainly because of a famous hunter and sportsman, writer Jack Oconnor, but he also said the .280 Rem was probably a better cartridge, when Rem brought it out is was under loaded for there auto's and pumps, but when guys loaded for bolt actions it shined. the 06 is a fine cartridge and very hard to beat for a allround cartridge.
But saying all of this and its the year 2006, and the 06's 100 birthday there are better choices today, like other members said 7mm/08 etc.
I built a gun on Rem 700 action in 7mmwsm and there is no .270 or 06 will shoot as flat and more than enough energy for anything in North America, give it a thought or go down the middle with a .280 Rem
