The 270 is a American favorite, mainly because of a famous hunter and sportsman, writer Jack Oconnor, but he also said the .280 Rem was probably a better cartridge, when Rem brought it out is was under loaded for there auto's and pumps, but when guys loaded for bolt actions it shined. the 06 is a fine cartridge and very hard to beat for a allround cartridge.
But saying all of this and its the year 2006, and the 06's 100 birthday there are better choices today,like other members said 7mm/08 etc.
I built a gun on Rem 700 action in 7mmwsm and there is no .270 or 06 will shoot as flat and more than enough energy for anything in North America, give it a thought or go down the middle with a .280 Rem
