RE: 270 vs. 30-06
Now and then I hear stories about the 270 being less accurate than the 30-06. In real life though I have owned several 25-06, 270, 280, 30-06 and 35 Whelen. All use the 30-06 casing and for the life of me, I have never seen any difference in accuracy between any of them. You get the same accuracy differences as you might expect between different rifles but not calibers in my expierence. The lack of competion rifles in 270 is probably due to the lack of different bullet weoghts and match grade bullets. This is certainly not to take anything away from them 30-06 but having used them both, I prefer the 270 for deer hunting. The 270 shoots flat enough to take deer out as far as anyone has any business shooting at game animals. IMO.
