Ruger still chambers the 7x57 in the #1, which is what I have. I hand load too so I have my bullets seated relly long out by the lands, It gives me a lot more case capacity. I loaded up some 150 BST at about 2800 fps and some 140gr BSTs and XLCs at about 2900 fps. It will shoot under 1" at 100 yards with some of the loads I have worked up including the 150gr BSTs at 2800fps.
Ruger still chambered the 7x57 in the m77 MkII in 2004, you may be able to still find one.
Hey, thanks for the reminder on the #1 in 7x57. I really like the Ruger #1s, especially the RSI model.
Yeah, I figure to maybe catch a Mod.77 in 7x57 at one of our local gun shows in the next year or so.

zrexpilot,

You've really converted people to hunting with a 243? Personally I don't know of 1 person who has tried and stuck with a 243 for very long.

I know alot of people who tried a 243 when they were looking for a lighter recoiling rifle but most of those guys have moved up to a 7mm-08 or a 308. I also know a few people that started out with a 243 but they have all moved up as well.

Well, if the 243 is a "first car" that gets traded off, then sale of the round would suggest a whole bunch of new blood coming in. Anyone know where it is on the top 10 list?

No.
We all started out with the .308. Untill they case necked it to a .24, the 7-08 is also a case necked .308. it's just the .24 offers the perfect balance of everything for medium size game.
Its better poison. you have to see the internals of a deer shot with all three of these calibers to see the difference, the .24 leaves more destruction and faster kills.

The 243 can't begin to touch the 7mm-08 and 308 for effectivness on medium size game. I have dressed out and processed every deer I ever killed so I have seen all the tales of the tape so to speak. There is no magic rifle or magic pill. The 243 is a good rifle which is on the smaller end of deer calibers. Nothing more and nothing less. I learned that and moved on to much better all around calibers.

Amen to that. While the 243 Win an be an effective cartridge for medium game, it isn't a 7mm-08, nor a 308. Nowhere near the same class. Anyone who says it is needs a head exam.

I fail to see the major difference between a 6mm-08 and a 7mm-08.

About 200lbs of energy for the 7mm at the cost of being 200fps slower and about 2-4 inches more bullet drop. thats all the difference, nothing more nothing less, they are basically the same gun whether you like it or not.
the 7-08 is nothing more than a .243 with a 140 gr bullet on the end of it.
