How the .243 stacks up
Heres a sectional density and bullet coefficiency comparo
Sierra gamekings................SD....................Coe ff.
.243,100gr.SBT..................242............... .......430
.257,117 gr.SBT.................253......................41 0
6.5, 140gr.SBT...................287................... ...495
7mm, 140gr SBT................248......................416
270,130gr.SBT...................242............... .......436
.308,150gr.SBT..................226............... ........380
Dont see a penetration issue some of you claim the .243 lacks, given the speed and these numbers. I see a comparable gun to any cartridge. better than some when you take ballistics into account.
Ya I'm bored, nothing else to do than talk about guns, since hunting season is a ways off.

He's baaack!!!
Zrex, you poor fella', GIVE IT A BREAK!
We all know now, speed is everything, and the 243 is king!
No other cartridge makes any sense at all. [] All worthwhile cartridge development stopped with the advent of the 243Win.

Do you have somthing against the 7mm? I don't see it up there.

I also am not including 160 or 180 gr bullets as I feel these are getting in the big game category's. This is medium game comparo.

Yeah, but look at the SD and BC of the 6.5mm. And nobody wants to shoot them. What a shame. [&o]

I dont have any expierence with this round, but by the way some of you talk about it, it sounds like poison to deer.

There are many other 7mm"s besides the Magnum's. The 7x57 Mauser and 7MM-08 very clearly fit in the tables above. You need to add in Momentum and bullet frontal area to complete the camparison. This because Momentum and bullet weight and sectional density are as important to energy as velocity is. This will also determine the penetration. However as far as you went it looks ok.

RE: How the .243 stacks up
I just don't see what is so great about a 243. A 100gr bullet at 2900fps is not fast by modern standards. The 243 isn't even the fastest 6mm on the market. The 6mm Rem will push a 100gr bullet over 3000fps so I guess that means that it's a little better than the now sainted 243. I'm sure some Weatherby guy has a 240 Wby that probably pushes or passes the 3400fps mark.
Numbers from a ballistic chart, wether its fps, sd, bc or any other number you want to use is only a starting point. All of them plus the shooters ability to place the bullet on target are required to have success. A person needs first hand experiance and confidence in want he uses to be an effective hunter.
If speed alone is the greatest measure of effectiveness then why doesn't everyone use a 240 Weatherby or a 220 Swift since nothing bigger than a 6mm bullet should be used for deer hunting.
