Carp, B.C. covers a lot of real estate and there's all kinds of different habitat. Blacktail country is pretty much parallel to the coast, generally coming inland as far as the height of land along the coast mountain range. The rest of the province has mule deer scattered over a wide region and there are excellent populations of whitetail mainly in the northeast (flatland extension of the prairies) and in the south.

We have both mule deer and whitetails locally but the whitetails are by far the more common. In fact, the mule deer population took a real hit a few years ago in a bad winter and haven't rebounded. The last mule deer I shot was 1996 and I've passed on them ever since as I'm not happy with their overall numbers. This just a regional phenomenon and other areas in B.C. have very good mule deer populations.

Here's some of the bucks I've taken - picture at the top of the page; note the whitetail:mulie ratio.

Thanks Carp!!!!
Well,to tell you all the truth,I blew a shot on 130-140 class 8pt Sat.am.He was in a thicket on the wrong side of the wind.I had picked out two "windows"that I might be able to sneek an arrow though. He passed the first window,no good, the secound window he was turning away. The shot just nicked a small branch, and in doing so,just nicked the buck.As I watched my birthday present run across a big bottom area, two cut cornfields,an open pasture and finally disappear into another woodlot about 3/4 of mile away,I felt kind of sick.Blood trail, next to nothing, and then nothing, but I still tracked, looked and hoped, for the next 2 1/2 hours.
Thats bowhunting, and nobody said it would be easy....Bob

This is getting old. 7 hours in a tree stand today, nothing, unless you count bird dogs. Figured a couple weeks into the season and midweek, the small gamers would give it a rest. Well, there were a couple hours without cow bells in the distance during the late morning, but no deer to be seen. Went out 1 day with the ML last week, nothing then either. ML ends on Friday, hope to get out with the bow before the shotgun season yahoos hit the woods. It may be tough, my mom's still in the hospital in NY, and I'll probably have to spend some time there... the fat lady is clearing her throat, but she aint singing yet...
