A great deal depends on each individuals setup and the broadhead used. If your shooting a low end setup pushing say 45 ft/lbs of ke and try to shoot a 2" head your begging for trouble. On the other hand if your setup is throwing out somthing like 80 ft/lbs of Ke then you should be able to drive most any resonable head through deer size game. The key is to match your setup with the broadhead that will work best with it. The more KE you have the wider range of broadheads you have to pick from. bow tune is also very important. I can't give you a cut and dry answer as their are so many variables but keep your equipment "balanced" and you won't have any problems.

Personally , it doesn't matter what type of head I'm using , I dont like quartering away shots. I've taken two of them in my lifetime and both of them were long tracking jobs due to my arrow being stopped by the opposite leg and lack of exit wound. Wait for the broadside double lunger and use any head you want.

The only penitration issues i have ever experience, was when i switched from a heavy aluminum to light carbon and stayed with the same wider cut "hard to open" head, I still use carbons but have gotten more educated on what is best for my setup, that said i have since switched back to fixed heads.

I personally wouldn't be hesitant to shoot mechanicals on a quartering animal but then again I am shooting enough KE that I could be shooting with a parachute attached to the other end of the arrow and still getting pass throughs But, my questions is why would any of you, that have doubts, want to shoot something that rules out what most people consider the most lethal shot with a bow?

Bowfanitic, Was it shot placement on the QA shot.?Because if you hit lungs it wouldn't have been a long track job even with out an exit hole.

I appreciate all the replies this has helped out alot to give me confidence in taking quartering away shots, maybe not with 2" but with some smaller three bladed expendables.

Alot of it truly will depend on the tip design and the relation of that tip to the begining of the blades. A little common sense and a guy can pick a great b-head! Good luck and good shootin

i've had no problems with quartering shots.i'm shooting Vortex 2 blade 100grain.they work good in my setup

Both shots were perfect shot placement. Both shots took out lung and heart with no exit wound due to opposite leg. A normal lung shot has plenty of blood for tracking but since I took out the heart there was nothing to pump the blood , that along with no exit wound and an arrow still plugging the entrance wound left me with a teaspoon of blood at best between both deer. Both deer were recovered but for whatever reason it seems that when you make a heart shot they tend to cover alot of ground real fast.

To each his own I guess. I know the QA shot is a popular choice but from my experiences I'll stick with broadside or even slightly quartering towards whenever possible.
