hunting nocturnal bucks
#11
The best bet would be to get as close to his bedroom as possible, but i would prefer to do this later in the season as i dont want to scare all the deer away if they detect me.Earlier in the season i would prefer to go deep in the bush and find the thickest nastiest stuff i can find, usually there would be enough shooting lanes,or trim some before season starts, and hunt. The buck would make a mistake sooner or later. The only time you would see a mature nocturnal buck in the clear would be during the rut chasing does or in a feed field in the middle of the night

Get there well before first light.
Hunt all day.
Hunt during the rut
Be anal about being scent free
dont let him know he's being hunted
organize a 1 man "nudge" if you know where he beds and he is using a funnel.

You are going to have to get back close to his bedding area, but there is one problem with that. He probably does not use them same trail all the time getting into his bedding area. See if you can find a funnel close to his bedding area and set up there but you are going to have have to get in there hours before daylight, well before he would think about going back into the bedding area. My self I would be onstand by 04:30 am. If he is in the area when you go into the stand he is history. I bumped one last year close to his bedding area just because I was late getting to my stand, and have not seen him since. If you are at all late getting to the woods don't bother going in, the chance of bumping him is to great.
Just as inportant and I think someone has already metioned it. Be completely anal about being sent free and hunt the wind. Use latex or sent loc gloves. If he even thinks he smells you he is outa there. Only go in if the wind is right. You might consider setting multiple stands for different wind conditions, but I would be getting that done now and don't go back into the area until season.
From a distance spend some time at night and early mornig before daylight and see if you can spot him feeding and see what time he is hedding back to the bedding area. This will tell you a lot.

Hunt him early in the season and hunt him hard. I have always found that the bigger bucks will be seen earlier in the season before they pattern you. The deer here in south Texas absolutely know when it's time to "go nocturnal". After the first few days of the season, forget seeing the muy grandes during daylight hours except during the peak of the rut when he might get caught far from home in unfamiliar country, after a long night of chasing. Otherwise your only chance is to hunt heavy brush where he might "stage" in an area frequented by the local talent.

Their are many reasons a buck turnes nocturnal. Their are too many factors to consider. I would focus on yourself, take some time to think about it, have you given him a reason to go nocturnal. These guys don't get big for being careless. Maybe you jumped him sometime and didn't know it or maybe your using the wrong entrance or exit when going into the woods? All lot of factors to consider. I'm not saying that your not doing the best you can to get him. But try to eliminate human error as much as possible.

Some questions. Is the property you are hunting private and are you the only person hunting there? The times you do spot this deer in the off season is he always in the same general area? Is he feeding when you see him during the day in the off season?, or have you just spotted him crossing a field, road or in the woods while he is traveling from a feeding to bedding area or while you are scouting in the off season ect,?. Do you increase your presence in the woods just prior to hunting season (example hanging stands, final trimming, scouting,) giving him the trigger to go nocturnal?, expecially in the area you know him to frequent. If you are not the only person hunting the property are others doing these things. If not I would try to start with some long range scouting using a spotting scope or binocs from as far as you can without entering the areas he frequents and from a location that gives you the best vantage to cover as much ground as possible. I would start while the bucks are in thier summer pattern, while they are feeding as much as they can to obtain the nutrition for optimum antler growth. I dont know when your season begins but if it's early like mid Sept like some of the States you may be able to observe a location where this buck may enter a feeding area from the same basic location on a regular basis without the buck ever being able to detect you presence. If you can locate an area like this I would try and sneak in during the middle part of the day and hang a stand using all the scent control I would use during the regular season. I would hang it on the edge of the woods where I saw the deer exit and would not venture into the woods. I also would make the stand selection one that could be hung quickly and quietly( I like the Lone Wolf Sticks and Hang on. None easier). Speaking of hang on, Hang onto your wallet when you hear the price. Pick a tree in advance while doing your long range scouting and dont go in there and do alot of trimming. If you can pattern him this way it's almost a one time maybe two time shot and then forget it. Thats what I would try.
