Anyone that bases the distance they can hit a live deer on their accuracy and group size when shooting a target on a range or in their backyard has not bowhunted long and/or have not had MANY opportunities to shoot at a live deer, or have not faced the various inclement conditions that can considerably reduce the distance that you should shoot.
Not only is the perspective much different and varied in accordance with static field conditions and ever-changing conditions that are not normally present when shooting a target, that live deer, and other deer that may be in the immediate area, is/are going to present you shooting circumstances that an inanimate target does not.

Good point!
When I'm set up for a FITA shoot, If I cant put every arrow in the size of a deer vital at 80 or even 100 yds I don't have a chance!! But thats with my target bow, 36'' stablizer, V bars, 6x scope ect.....Not a hunting bow from a stand with the old heart beating a million miles an hour and everthing else you encounter while hunting!!

If you know without a doubt you can make the shot , take it!
If you have to think about other factors such as branches you may not see or wind being a factor or anything else that may raise questions , dont take it!
A wise man once said "if you have to talk yourself into believing you have a shot....dont take it"!

It varys from person to person. My limit on deer size game is about 40-50 yards. The reason for this is not accuracy but lose of speed. I'm afraid that I have lost to much momentum to get a pass through everytime. I paractice out to 80 yards.

My Max is about 40. Last year I shot a beautiful fat doe at 40 yards and had a complete pass through. (But I don't shoot speed, I shoot heavy arrows.
) I practice out to 50 and occasionally 60, but the majority of the deer I've harvested is 15 to 20. If and its a big if, I get a Wyoming Antelope license, I'll practice shooting 50 even more. Because the far side of the water hole is 45 yards. I'll probably just wait until one comes in to the close side which is about 20 yards.
Shoot, truth be known, I probably won't even draw a tag.[&o] Been trying for Elk and Antelope for the past four years without any luck.
